Nafplio questions

Hi,

My wife and I have several days off from work on the first week of April and we looking for a new destination. We have a 5 month old baby and for that reason we do are not doing to several eastern European cities we want to visit as we afraid it will be to cold for the baby.
A Cypriot friend of mine recommended me about Nafplio and we intending to come especially from Israel for 3-4 days stay.I have several questions if you don't mind:

1. Is the first week of April is nice time to visit? The weather is nice and everything at the old city is open?
2. Do you think we will have difficulties to travel with a baby at the old city as there are many stairs, etc?
3. The train from Athens is working? What is the best way to get there?
4. We are not looking for lying on the beach but to hang around in a city or a small town, enjoy city landscape and restaurants. Do you believe it is a good destination for us? Is it sounds reasonable to travel from Israel for 3 nights in Nafplio?

Thanks,
Ori

Lots of people take short breaks these days, so if you can get a good deal on airfare from Israel to Athens, then why not?

I'm not an expert on Nafplio, but know that an express bus from Kifissos Station in Athens takes about 2 hours. If you are up to it, you could hire a car at Athens Airport and drive to Nafplio in about the same time. There won't be a train.

April weather in Nafplio probably won't be much different from Israel, but of course that month can be changeable.

Hi oricoop,

We spent several days in Nafplio last June. The drive from Athens is mostly highway and would take about 2 or so hours.

Not sure what you mean by "the old city" unless you are thinking of the fortresses ( there are two) at the top of town. One is steps away from the NAFPLION PALACE HOTEL.

We stayed at ground level near the water at AMPHITRYON HOTEL, and walked right into town, which was mostly car free.

If you do want to get to the top of town, you can either drive and park in the lot near the castle, or take a cab, which wasn't very expensive.

Nafplio is a city that is "open"all year round, it is a city with a larger permanent population, and quite the center of the prefecture of Argolis.
Everything will be open in April, and there will be many restaurants and cafes for every taste.

Most hotels are concentrated in the old city anyway, which is the centre of Nafplio. You are right about the stairs but as long as you choose a hotel near the seaside around Syntagma square you will be fine.

The weather at the beginning of April is usually very pleasant with temperatures around 20-24 C during the day, it will be cooler at night, so it is advisable to pack also something warmer.
April is not warm enough for lying on the beach anyway.... and the water won't be warm enough either.

There is no train to Nafplio anymore, you can only reach it from Athens by buss. There is an express bus ( X 93 ) from the Athens Airport taking you directly to the Bus station.

Busses are living frequently to Nafplio, here is the current timetable :

A lovely Nafplion hotel that is well situated, facing the seafront on an open plaza, is Hotel Agammemnon. Balconies with Sea view or plaza view. AND, new parents, it has a lift!

This superb NONcommercial website http://www.visitnafplio.com/ tells you absolutely everything you need to know about Nafplio... click on EVERY section and STUDY, then u won't need to ask about the basics. It's got all the bus directions, schedule, cost, hotel recommendation (Same as mine, but if it's full, look at Omorfo Poli). Things to do. Walks to take. and DON'T miss the videos... there's one of Nafplio in February, and one "in Spring" so you will see exactly what's in store. Bring your folding "cane" stroller for le bebe, because most streets are flat, flagstone, no-cars. Perfect for you. After you have explored each section, ask us about anything not covered.

One nice thing to know is.. the canopied row of cafes at the seafront are available to enjoy sunsets, even in chilly weather, there are plastic sides that roll down if it's windy, and some even have little space heaters. They want you to enjoy the view! And the seating is little upholstered loveseats, perfect for perching a baby's seat upon.
