Mykonos or Amalfi Coast
 

Hello everyone,
I am only new to this forum and was after some advice from all you travellers.
Planning a trip to Europe mid September 2016. We are going to Italy for 3 weeks and Santorini for 4 nights. We had planned on going to Mykonos for 4 nights but now wondering if we should spend 4 nights at Positano as I only allowed a day trip from Naples to Positano.

Would love some feedback I really don't know which way to go!!

I vote for 4 nights in Positano.

If you allow 4 days how much time do you really have on Mykonos? You have to fly to get there (through Athens?) and then have to get back to Athens the day before your flight home (or risk missing it). Wouldn't this mean only 2 days really on Mykonos?

I would stay in Italy and see more of the AC, Pompeii and Capri.

Caveat: I am not a beach person - will relax at pool for limited time but really want to sightsee and relax in cafes people watching.

We don't have a set time frame of being away, so travel time is not an issue for us.
Either way we will make sure we have 4 nights 3 days at Mykonos or 4 nights 3 days at Positano.
We just can't decide which one to choose :)
We like to sightsee too but we have a busy itinerary in Italy so it would be nice to sit by a beach and relax with and have a swim for at least 1 of the days.

Imo, no doubts, Positano ( just remember with three or four days there, you can visit Amalfi, Ravello and/or Capri).
The amalfi coast is a real marvel.

Mykonos is nice, but the real must is Santorini, if we speak of greek islands.

As always, this is just personal, others may think the opposite!

If you go to Positano instead of Mykonos does that mean you will have only four days for Greece and plan to spend them all on Santorini? Perhaps it would be better to skip Santorini as well, and spend all your time in Italy.

Santorini is a beautiful island, but for a visit to Greece I would want to see more and be there longer than four days. Mykonos is only 2½ hours from Santorini by highspeed ferry, but there are other places as easy to reach that I would prefer. Naxos, for instance is a 2 hr trip, and from there you could go on to Athens for a night or two.

What city do you plan to fly home from?

I have been twice to the Amalfi coast, and Mykonos and I vote Mykonos. The Amalfi coast has gorgeous towns and excellent drives. But it is very touristy and today you will only find tourists there, no locals at all. Also Capei is overrated, if you ever been to a Greek island you will understand. Mykonos has beautiful architecture, unique colour, busy towns, excellent beaches, quiet villages and many boutique shops and restaurants. You can even visit Delos as a daytrip from Mykonos, the birthplace of God Apollo and a sacred piligrimage of the Ancient World. It's a UNESCO site, and you will see amazing artifacts, ancient streets and monuments from this once prosperous sacred city.

Mykonos has quiet villages? The only village on Mykonos other than Mykonos town is Ano Mera......
I think Mykonos - even though it's one of my favourite islands - is a very touristy island :)

I confess I struggle to understand why people go to the Amalfi coast when they could go to Greece and its islands instead, but having said that, my concern about your flying to a Greek island for 4 days in mid-September is that it put sa lot of pressure on those 4 days to be wonderful weather. It's a pretty expensive investment to purchase all the transportation tickets you will need to get from Italy to one of the Greek islands.

If you rainy days in Positano, there is usually something else you can figure out to do, even if you need to hire a driver to make it work, and you haven't spent so much money to get there.

Well, the friends I have made over the years who live on the Positano (and elsewhere on the AC) would disagree.

If you are going to be spending time in Naples, adding on time in Positano is a logical choice. IMO it is the most picturesque village on the AC, which is one of the reasons I spend a week there each June.
