Mykonos in September

Hi,
We are travelling to Mykonos for 5 days next week. We have flights booked to Athens and then struggling with how to get to Mykonos and where to stay there. Any advice? flight or a ferry? which port if we choose a ferry? Should we buy a tickets in advance? We would like to rent a villa in Mykonos by the beach or a nice hotel suite (there are three of us), should we book in advance or do it when we get there? If we book in advance which website to use to book the hotels. Lot of questions, I know.. but we really appreciate any help you guys can provide.

Thank you

Can you tell us bit more?
Do you have 5 days to spend in Greece in total?
If yes, i would suggest you fly directly to Mykonos upon your arrival in Athens. ( depending on the arrival time of course)
This is the fastest way, otherwise you should take the bus to either Piraeus or Rafina port, and then ferry to Mykonos.

Should you decide to ferry to Mykonos, there is no need to buy tickets in advance, you can buy them easily at the airport, from Amphitrion Holidays, which is located at the arrivals hall.

Regarding the accommodation, what is your budget?
There are no villas by the sea in Mykonos, and the very few ones belong to VIP's and cannot be rented.
Renting a villa in Mykonos would mean paying a very very high price.

As for hotels, Mykonos has plenty of fabulous hotels, i would recommend Cavo Tagoo, one of the bst hotels of the island ,located in walking distance from the town of Mykonos
Other hotels are Bill and Coo, Mykonos Blue, Santa Marina or Saint John.

If you want to stay indeed at a hotel of this categgory, you certainly will have to book in advance. Hotels are not on the same spot, so that you can make a tour on the spot upon arrival andask/compare for prices.
You could only do that in case you wanted a private room or low category hotel, usually there are room and small hotel owners at the port waiting with offers.

Arriving in Mykonos can often be a problem... Once you have booked your hotel, make sure you book your transfer as well.
Otherwise there is the risk of not finding a taxi, and having to wait a couple of hours for one.

A good and reliable website is :www.booking.com

I agree with what clausar wrote. Conventional ferries arrive at the new port, while SeaJet 2, the catamaran, arrives at the old port. If all you are looking for is a simple room, there are people waiting at the ports. Your post suggests you want something special, and for that you should prebook. I suggest you look for something in town rather than at the beach. There is good bus service during the day to a number of different beaches from town. It's nice to be able to walk back to your hotel after a night out in Mykonos, and not have to worry about a taxi after the buses stop running. :-)

Heimdall, if OP is looking for a suite in a luxury hotel, options in town are limited to one or two hotels.

Most 5 star deluxe hotels are located outside the town, with Cavo Tagoo being the closest one.

Renting a car would be an option to avoid public busses and taxis, in September there is no problem with finding parking space in Mykonos town. The car would give you the mobility of visiting the great beaches of the island.

Yes, I was thinking of the Belvedere, or a number of other hotels less upmarket.

I arrived in Mykonos today and am staying at Poseidon Hotel on the south side of town. The hotel arranged a free transfer from the port for us, which made it very easy. I believe there are suites here but not sure about availability. I booked through hotels.com and got a better deal than on the hotel's web site. Its a 3 star hotel, which feels pretty accurate so far. Great pool area though with excellent location.

I'm obviously enjoying the free wi-fi in our room but i'm gonna sign off and go explore this town! :)
