we stayed at a Best Western Resort on Mykonos in 1998. It was not in town, but rather out a bit. It was right next to a public beach. Wonderful grounds, food and the resort staff was wonderful. There was also a large salt water swimming pool. We enjoyed the resort. I don't know hotel in town. I'm sure others on the board will.

hello Areala

Most hotels on Mykonos remain open to the middle of October and some to the end of October. Of course, rates are much better at this time also.

There are hotels that are open at least until late December, some all year round.

Some of the popular restuarants here DO begin to run their menu down first week in October and by end of second week they will be ready to close. So if you can be on island first October week you will be OK.

The weather can vary. Warm in daytime but a little colder in evenings is usual. Most people eat inside restaurants not outside at beginning October.

Will you fly to the island or by sea? October 2005 we had two days with cancelled ferry due to strong winds.

If you say your budget per night I will recommend hotels.

Thanks for the information thanos...I was just looking at Aegean air and it seems airfare is only about 56 euros I don't know how much it is by ferry but the flight is only 30 minutes and the ferry is 5.5 hours I think so if that is the case I think we will fly in.

I was hoping to budget under 140 euros per night for hotels....is that possible without staying in a dump???

hello Areala

With your budget I give you some hotel ideas. I chosen all town hotels. All are in your budget or maybe 5/10 euro more using October rates. If you may want to stay out of town tell me and I will find some for you.

Also, is good to looking at TripAdvisor reviews for the hotels i give you.

Harmony Hotel http://www.harmonyhotel.gr/

Semeli Hotel

Rochari Hotel

Cavo Tagoo Hotel

Myconian K Hotel

Car ferry has different prices from 25 euro to 45 euro for trip from Piraeus to Mykonos.

Aegean is good and on time better than Olympic. They use new airplanes but not Olympic who still have old.

Thank You thanos....is staying in town better. Which would you prefer?

thanos_GR Jul 29th, 2005 03:47 PM

hello Areala

For me I recommend the town but many many people prefer a hotel out of town or beach. It is very personal thing. Others users here I hope can tell you what they think.

Some out of town hotels have courtesy bus to town, some not. Also, local bus can help and taxi also. No long queue for taxi in October. if you want a beach then you stay out of town.

I think that town is good as you easily can take other ferry trips or go to Delos. For restaurants & bars to find, you need to come to town. Again, in October is quiet in town here so no crowds and is peaceful.

I hope Fodor friends who stay at hotel out of town tell you what they experience.

When you chose your hotel let me know and I will give you more information about it. Or if you need help with hotel before you chose tell me and I will help also.

Hi Areala:

I just returned 2 weeks ago from Greece, including visits to both Mykonos and Naxos.

On Mykonos we preferred to be in town for the reasons Thanos mentions...and we just loved Harmony Hotel. Beautiful, and only 1 year old so in very good condition. It might be better to be in town for you vs. the beach areas since in October you may be able to do less at the beach. I suppose it depends upon your interests!

On Naxos we loved Hotel Galini & Sofia. Wonderfully located (adjacent to town and the beach), with gracious hosts, and an excellent value - 50 euros per room in July! So I would guess in October if they are open that the rates might be even better.

Perhaps if you provide a bit more information about what your travel interests are on these islands - e.g. going out in the evening & shopping, vs. hiking and relaxing, that may also help for others to post recommendations. Our interests were all of the above (though we did no true hiking) and we were very happy with those hotel choices.

You will love Greece!
