Mykonos
We are arriving for a half day in Mykonos...plan to take a taxicab to somewhere near the water and just do a cafe with local food and some beer and wine..? Any suggestions? Are cabs at the cruise ship pier readily available and are they a ripoff.? How much to town and the cafe area.?

The cruise ships dock at Tourlos, which is 3km from Mykonos Town. You could share a taxi with other passengers, or walk into town in about 30 minutes. There are restaurants in the Little Venice area (you pay for the view) and others scattered around town. Another option would be to go by taxi or bus to one of the nearby beaches, and have a meal in a beachside taverna.

Hi
From memory the cruise dock is a 10 or 15 minute pleasant stroll to Chora, the main town. This is where the cafe area is. I'm sure you've heard of Little Venice. There are a few restaurants there but I you'll have to ask others for recommendations. |
I guess it depends on how fast you walk. :-)
Most of the cruise ship passengers don't wander very far from the old harbor area, and there are lots of cafes catgering for them overlooking the water. Little Venice is between the old harbor and the windmills. If you want to venture out of town, there are several beaches only about a 15 min bus ride from the station near the windmills. Paradise Beach is lively, Ornos and Plati Yialos built up, and Agios Ioannis quiet, with a couple of tavernas overooking the beach. Agios Ioannis was the "Shirley Valentine" beach, so is a favorite of women of a certain age. :-)) |
Catgering? I just invented a new word! I meant catering. :-))

SEA SATIN or maybe it's SATIN SEA?? is a very nice restaurant on the beach/water in Mykonos, and only a few blocks from the shops and boutiques.

thanks for your input..so I take it that it ain't much to do with only haf a day there...and how much does that taxi run just to town and back.?

If your cruise ship offers an excursion to the archeological site on Delos (a neighboring uninhabited island), take the opportunity. It's one of the most important sites in Greece, and only 30 minutes from Mykonos Town by small ferry. I have been there twice, and would give up shopping, lunch, and just about anything else for another visit. The site is open only mornings and early afternoons, though. For some reason I don't understand, many cruise ships time their port calls at Mykonos during hours when the site is closed.

Hi again
Another option is to rent a car and check out the different beaches - they're beautiful. Take lunch at one of them. Probably cheaper than Little Venice. Arrange for the hire company to meet you at the dock. |
Thanks again for the additonal replies..I think we'll just stick close to the cafe thing as we arrive noontime and leave early evening.
