Dear Dobby,
You have been presented with a wonderful opportunity for someone your age to spend some time in another country, an opportunity to learn and grow and develop maturity and self-confidence. When my daughter left home for what turned out to be two years in Paris, I told her to sieze every chance to fully experience a wonderful city and amazing culture, and she did just that, making friends, exploring, immersing herself in the culture. I've been reading your posts and wondering what you expect to have gained at the end of your experience in Britain. Judging by what you've shared with us on this board, your interactions seem to be limited to complaining about services or hiding from your neighbours. Being in a strange country can be intimidating, especially on your own, not knowing anyone, but if you make the effort to get out and meet people, see the sights, you could benefit so much more from this experience. I remember going to France on my own when I was close to your age, and spending the first week in my room feeling homesick, but once I went out and started meeting people, I had a great time.

I really hope that things improve before it's time for you to go home.

Well put Baladeuse...Hope Dobby takes it to heart!!! My daughter did the same as yours and came home so much richer after 1 year in Spain and I was able to enjoy her home away from home for 2 months also..Never too old to carpa diem!!!

My daughter, at age 19, spent five months travelling around India, Nepal, and SE Asia. She left on her own, but made many friends during the trip. She came home brimming with self confidence and got a good university degree.

According to Dobby he attended the V Festival last summer, but we haven't heard anything but complaints since then. He can't have spent the last four months holed up in his flat. I'm sure there is a lot Dobby isn't telling us. :-)

I'm starting to vote for the idea of the stepfather putting up the money to get Dobby out of the country for a while. I know I would pay to have Dobby go away.

I assume that Dobby is over 18. Forget about tea and bickies, he needs to get to the pub. That way, he'll be able to meet the villagers and satisfy their curiosity.

I have no knowledge of this British cultural phenomenon. I have not seen it on any of the threads about what to do in the UK. First hand reports please, since some of you seem pretty knowledgeable.

Seems to me, it's more like "Impoverished American Playwright Seeks Inspiration Among Odd Characters in English Countryside" (please recall that he is TYPING away on his computer - or is it a non-electric typewriter designed to make clattery noises through thin walls?)

I understand that the English are no different than Americans, accept the accents. Sometimes it's hard to understand what someone is saying. Like today I was talking to this man who was on my laptop and he asked me what ''Giant Apps'' were. I thought he said ''Janice Apes''. Other than that they carry the same personality traits as people back at home. It doesn't even feel like I left home, accept the currency is too damn high, and there are a lot more elderly people walking about. :| Only time I see a huge crowd of teenagers or people in the early or mid 20s is on the weekend late at night. Or if you go to a Mcdonalds (which is far from my home). Otherwise I have to take a cab out of the village.

mimar- My heating is included with my elec bill which is 30 pounds a month. So I use as much heating as I want. And I don't even need a towel after I shower :D
