Actually, hand-washed jeans can dry overnight. Here's the trick--

After washing them (and ringing out some of the excess water), roll them up in a towel and then jump up and down on the towel. Depending on how wet they are, you might want to use another towel if the first gets soaked. Then just hang them up and they should be dry in the morning. Yes, they will be a bit "crunchy", but they do soften a bit after wearing for a while.

Also, if your shoes/hiking boots get wet (I hike in Ireland a lot), stuff them with newspaper. Change the newspaper are a few hours if they are really soaking. Otherwise, just leave overnight and they will be dry in the morning.

When traveling in Europe, I like to stay at small hotels or B&B's and often have to carry my own luggage up flights of stairs. Therefore, I pack as lightly as possible. The best hint I ever got about packing is to use gallon sized, ziplock, plastic bags. You can put three pairs of microfiber pants in one bag, three or four poly/cotton tee shirts in another, roll up a polyester dress with jacket in another, etc. No more digging through a messy suitcase, everything is in it's own bag. You can get all the air out of the bags before you close them and your clothes are never wrinkled. Of course, you don't want to pack anything that wrinkles anyway. Another great tip for women are underpants called Lovepats. They are available at Walmart in a pack for three for under five dollars. They aren't beautiful, but they are comfortable, weigh next-to-nothing and wash and dry extremely quickly. The same thing is available in Coolmax but at a much higher price. I usually just take three or four pair with me for a trip of a month or so, wash them out every night and throw the whole lot away when I get home. Enjoy your trip!
