"I think it was specifically the very graphic simulation of sexual acts by the puppets"
Yes, it is hard to describe to someone who has not seen the show just how graphic the puppet sex can be. That was the part where I hid my eyes and slid down in my seat! |
Yep, describing graphic puppet sex is a tough one.....

Here is an image of the main poster all over London for Avenue Q, and particularly outside the theatre. Others were even more suggestive and graphic. It should not have been a surprise to anyone that this was not "The Sound of Music"!

I was aware it wasn't "The Sound of Music". It is listed as inappropriate for under 12 year olds. I was not expecting such a graphic and vulgar show. I accept full responsiblity for not being better informed about my choice.

And even though you may not have liked the show I still don't think it was completely out of line to take a 15 year old to see it. My 29 year old stepdaughter did not like the show either - so doesn't have to do with age. But as I said before I really couldn't believe the parents with small children who did not see or ignored the very prominently placed warnings at the theatre in NYC. Once they realized what it was I was surprised that they returned with little ones in tow for the 2nd act.
BTW - you might want to think twice about taking your teens to see Spring Awakening too. This has graphic sex with live actors not puppets - but it is very popular with the kids and I'm anxious to see it as well. |
I don't challenge anyone's decision to take a 15 year old. It wasn't a good choice for my companion and me. I would, like you, question the judgement of a person who took a very young child given the warnings. There are a lot of degrees of "blue" between "The Sound of Music" and "Avenue Q". For my tastes, it went too far. But, I fully understand that would not be a universal opinion, just mine. And thanks for the heads up about "Spring Awakening".

Oh yes. I'd take a 15 year old to Avenue Q long before taking one to Spring Awakening! Now that is graphic and it's humans, not puppets!
On the other hand, I'd probably take a mature 15 year old to either AFTER a bit of discussion about what they will see. |
