Heather, I LOVED reading your trip report! I'd have enjoyed it even if it was twice as long! Your enjoyment of London really comes shining through, which makes your report all the more fun to read.

My sister and I took our very first trip to London together, too. We both cherish wonderful memories of our escapades on that 1995 trip, and still have a laugh over them regularly.

I over-shopped on that trip, thought I had to bring back something for EVERYONE and their brother. I bought 23 T-shirts, among (many) other things. My DS thought that since my suitcase had become way too crowded and way too heavy for the journey home, that I should sell off some shirts on the streets of London, right out of my suitcase. She still, to this day, refers to my luggage as the "London T-shirt kiosk".

Great report HeatherH! And really not all that long.

More grocery store souvenir things - I have a friend who will disown me if I don't bring her plain chocolate Hobnobs every trip, others like digestive biscuits, many types of sweets, teas, marmalades/jams, Baxter tinned soups, ice cube bags (yes, really) and a lot of other things not available in many parts of the States.

Heather, I really enjoyed your report! To the people who say they don't like long reports, I'd like to know what their big hurry is! Thank you for sharing.

Glad you made it the V&A, although I haven't been there in a while it is one of my favorites. By any chance was the glass over the information desk a piece by Dale Chihuly? There was a fabulous exhibit of his glass there in 2001, I wondered if this piece was purchased by the museum.

Bobbie737 - we stayed at the Days Inn Westminster at 80 Belgrave Road. We made our reservations through Expedia last August and got a TERRIFIC price (loads better than their regular advertised price). Lets just say, the hotel completely exceeded our expectations - we found it much better than the average american Days Inn.

flanneruk - the types of things we bought in Tesco Metro to bring home for friends - different kinds of candy, we don't have much Cadbury here, cheap paperbacks, condiments that are just so different than the ones we can get around here. Mainly Cadbury chocolate, the dairy milk bars we can find here are awful, very different from the ones in London.

Dave - we did finally just stick to one section of the British Museum (the egyptian section, of course!), I still am going back to it the next time in London (preferably for a much longer length of time!)

Grantop - I'm sorry, I haven't a clue on the artist who made the glass sculpture. It was VERY large, was green and yellow entwined "strands" - it is just funny to watch people look at the picture and turn it all different ways before finally looking at me and asking "ok, what IS this?" - but then again, I am easily amused.

I'm glad my report was read - it was great being able to relive some of my favorite moments while writing it. Thanks!

Well, I read your entire trip report. I like long reports that give you lots of ideas for your next trip.

I have the same reaction to The Louvre in Paris as you had to the British Museum. Both of them are overwhelming.

Heather,
I enjoyed your trip report as well. I was in London 3/17 - 3/23. I'll post my report soon. And yes, it will be long!

Heather - What a wonderful London report. I am heading there 5 weeks from tomorrow and after reading about your stay in London I am more excited than ever. After London I am taking the Eurostar to Paris which I know you will love. I was there in 2001 for 12 days and loved every moment of it.

My only concern is I am flying from LAX into Cincinnati via Delta Airlines. I have only 1 hr and 10 minutes to get from one plane to the other. As with you I have been assured this is enough time especially since I will have my luggage with me. How much time did you have between your flights?

I don't understand why anyone would want to go to Windsor Castle when the queen is there - it's not like you are going to see her. We were there last week and it was the biggest disappointment of our trip. I have been three times, but the chapel is still my favorite. It was closed because the queen was there.

Heather,

Enjoyed the report very much. Reminds me to spend more time in a single block next time in London. There's plenty to see and do!

Hope you're enjoying this beautiful Memphis weather here at home now that you're back among us mortals!

Thanks for writing it up.

Madison - on the way TO London, we had about an hour and ten minutes to change planes in Chicago - we didn't make it. But our plane was delayed out of Memphis. On the way FROM London - we had one hour forty five minutes to change planes (And clear customs) in DC, we made it with about 15 minutes to spare. Our hour to change again in Chicago was enough time to even grab lunch. So - if you are delayed, good luck! otherwise, you should be fine (hopefully!)

econner - we had no idea the Queen would be at Windsor the day we went - and nothing that is normally open to the publice was closed off - but no, we didn't get to see her. Just her dog.

Clifton - the weather is AWESOME! Went to the park this weekend and thoroughly enjoyed myself!

Heather, I thought your trip description was terrific - thanks for sharing!

I'd like more info on one detail, though - is Richard's B&B in London? If so, I'd love to get the contact info for a trip this fall..

Thanks!

Well, Heather, we certainly are worn out walking with you around London, also Salisbury! You did lots of touristy things that are enjoyable. Each has his/her own interests and for us British Museum is a must. Also Covent Gardens. But yes on our trips a few years ago we did enjoy much of what you mention.

On one such trip with Backroads in Britain we enjoyed being out of London in the countryside and seeing York, Cambridge, Bath, Scotland, Wales, etc.

No one should allow less that three hours for overseas connections! We are accustomed now to staying overnight in NYC, St. Louis or elsewhere coming from the Middle West to make sure we have enough time. Almost missed a flight to Ireland once though we had allowed six hours! Also it works well on return trip overcoming jet lag. Worth the extra bucks.
