My Google Maps

Since last month (Sept) Google Classic maps has been defunct to the extent of not being able to save/edit/personalise.

Many of my maps have been linked in several forums and I am led to believe these will remain available..(how long for ?)

However I will not be able to continue producing these types of detailed maps any longer.. Google maps requires folk like myself to sign up for "Pro" @ €4 per month to continue doing the things I previously did on Classic maps..

Sorry.

yes it is a pain for me too, classic was so easy to use, while this new thing is just irritating

have you read this?
https://support.google.com/maps/answer/6009908?hl=en
"What does this mean for me?

After your maps are upgraded, you’ll be able to access, edit, view, and share your existing maps with the new My Maps.
You won’t be able to access, create, or edit your My Maps from the classic Google Maps anymore.
You can access your maps in the Google My Maps for Android app. However, you won’t be able to see them in the Google Maps for Android app or in the Google Earth iOS app."

Well that's it.. Since this morning all my maps as were known are gone!

custom Icons have been turned into blue markers, all my coloured routes made into blue lines all my links within locations removed... months of effort, pages of information and any degree of clarity all gone!! Thanks Google!!

I see what you mean. I linked so many of your great maps for people when you vanished a couple of months ago.

The number of reasons to avoid Google for the ordinary person grows daily. My serious tech friends and those concerned about privacy have long since migrated. As an early adopter of Google, I have mental barriers to changing over, but I had mental barriers with regard to Apple products, and here I sit tapping on my iPad Mini.

Some of the old links do still give a semblance of what was,, lots of ferries on that Connemara map lots of Historic sites on my 10 day northern road trip,, whether its worth trying to find old links to maps I can't edit anyway?

Damn; that explains why I couldn't create a new map for a hoped for trip.

Any other suggestions for map creation?

I'm listening for an answer too! :-(

I thought it was just me!!! Hope someone has a better suggestion for map software.

http://www.mapquest.com/ is an option much the same as Google's old Classic maps.. unfortunately I haven't figured it out just yet.. Think there are ways to customise the appearances but beyond my current thought pattern.

tuscanlifeedit Nov 12th, 2014 12:28 PM

I just spent about 15 minutes on mapquest. It appears that it might do what the old Google maps did. I found it more complicated to search for things and then mark them, which was the big attraction for me on Google maps.

Also needs extra steps of copying and pasting some code into the URL window to establish my saved map.

But at least I can build custom maps.

I wonder if anyone printed out your maps Tony instead of just saying the links like I did. Might help you some.

Dukey1 Nov 12th, 2014 05:16 PM

The thing I like the most about Mapquest is being able to send the maps directly to my car's navigation system.
