My girlfriend wants to change her birth year on her new passport.

My girlfriend wants people to think she is younger when we travel and is about to apply for a new passport application listing an incorrect birth year. I think it is silly but she is determined to do it. Can this get her in any trouble? Or am I over-reacting to something that's not a real problem?
thanks.

Is this a joke?

MaureenB Sep 27th, 2004 11:13 AM

Is this question for real??

Michael Sep 27th, 2004 11:14 AM

To my knowledge it is illegal to provide false information on a document such as a passport. Does she also do it on her driver's license?

m_kingdom2 Sep 27th, 2004 11:15 AM

Firstly, that is fraudulent.

Secondly, it's impossible to do legally as you need to produce a previous passport or some form of birth certificate.

Thirdly, doesn't it make you wonder if she's in the habit of faking other things too?

Iregeo Sep 27th, 2004 11:16 AM

Without having the application in front of me, I'm guessing that the app. needs to be signed under penalty of perjury. If so, COULD she get into trouble? Yep. WILL she get into trouble is another story.

Michael Sep 27th, 2004 11:16 AM

And another thing: how many people does she think actually look at her passport? Why does she care what immigration officials and hotel clerks read?

Iregeo Sep 27th, 2004 11:17 AM

What's the deal -- is she not aging well?

kismetchimera Sep 27th, 2004 11:17 AM

How many Martinis she had last night?

janeg Sep 27th, 2004 11:18 AM

Sure, let her do it. Then she will get in all sorts of trouble & you can dump her.

starspinners Sep 27th, 2004 11:20 AM

If it's a US passport you're asking about go to http://travel.state.gov/passport/DS-0082
One must swear or affirm that the statements made on the passport application are true.

miguelgcuadra Sep 27th, 2004 11:23 AM

She should see herself in a mirror and be more concerned there than the number is a travel document........

SuzieC Sep 27th, 2004 11:25 AM

Whatta hoot!

JaneG, that is some of THE MOST practical advice I've ever read on Fodors!

I think you should suggest that she dump you for a much younger man. Accessorizing with a younger man will certainly take years off her appearance and I'm sure she'll have significantly higher levels of endorphin, which can make her feel younger.

m_kingdom2 Sep 27th, 2004 11:29 AM

...those endorphins might stop the faking it issue too.

mgmargate Sep 27th, 2004 11:30 AM

Tell her to go ahead.Set aside bail money.

FainaAgain Sep 27th, 2004 11:32 AM

I knew one woman who changed her birth year after WWII so she could marry a younger guy. When I met her she was pulling her hair out being unable to reinstate her actual age to retire on time. Wemr, tell your gf it will come back to her!

l_jackson95814 Sep 27th, 2004 11:46 AM

The passport department already has her information linked to her SSN. Tell her we would all like to turn back the clock, but life gets better with age.

P_M Sep 27th, 2004 12:08 PM

Assuming this is a serious question, doing this would undoubtedly be fraud. If she wants people to think she's younger, tell her to have surgery.

KT Sep 27th, 2004 12:11 PM

I don't know...I'm thinking of using somebody else's picture on my passport so people will think that I look better.
