My 26 days Central Europe Trip in February!

Hi All!

My and my gf both 25 years old from asia am heading into the cold winter of Europe end of January 2017. I know it's gonna be cold but it's the only dates me and my girlfriend can take a month off from work. So here goes!

Arrive in...
Amsterdam 3 nights
Berlin 2 nights
Prague 4 nights
Budapest 4 nights
Vienna 4 nights
Salzburg 3 nights
Venice 3 nights
Munich 3 nights
...Fly home from munich

Can anyone advice me where i should add or remove? Berlin is like a stopover towards Prague and Venice i added that in because it's near to Salzburg. Other than that is this doable or should i change it? I've never been to europe and i'm interested in castles and history as well as the beautiful view! Also it'll be in cold February so i'm not sure what is exactly possible to do in some cities. I would like to go skiing as well but am not sure where is exactly affordable from my list of counties. I need all the help! Thanks!

Hi, Zalster, and welcome to Fodor’s!

While this trip is probably do-able, at least in a technical sense, I’m not sure it is as good a plan as it could be because you don’t seem to be considering the time it will take to get from place to place. Transportation (not to mention packing / unpacking, checking in / out, getting to / from train stations, etc.) can easily take a good half-day or more, so the time you have in each of these places is much more limited than you seem to realize. Frankly, your ratio of time in transit to time to actually visit these places is too high for me; YMMV.

And Venice is quite a bit out of the way.

IMO, you and your girlfriend would do well to play a bit with rome2rio.com to get a sense of your transportation options (it’s not a perfect site, but a good way to get started) and to mark up a calendar by allocating time to transportation (with some time to either side for the aforementioned activities). If there are particular things you want to see or do, check hours and mark them on the calendar, too. Also consider the amount of daylight (you can check things like that on timeanddate.com) and climate (wunderground.com).

Good luck!

My daughter and I were in Prague, Berlin, Munich and Salzburg end of January 2016. We loved Berlin. If you do drop Venice I'd add the time to Berlin.

Thanks Kja and nubbyrose,

i would drop venice i think. no point heading there if it's out of the way. It looks nice on the map because it looks doable. I guess not then. Would you guys advise me to get a eurail pass? or should i get inividual tickets. They looks so expensive via rome2rio. Also more questions:

1) How many nights in salzburg?
2) Munich or Berlin would be a better choice to stay longer?
3) If i were to stay in munich, would it be better to do a day trip to salzburg?
4) @nubbyrose, you went in january. How was the weather? Was it extremely cold that i cant really enjoy the day as much?
5) Where would i go to ski? Czech or Austria?
6) If i were to drop 3 nights in Venice where would i distribute the days?

Thanks!!!!!!!

IMO, these are decisions that only YOU and your girlfriend can make.

And you can't determine whether a pass will be to your advantage until you know what you are doing.

Time to do some homework!

BTW, "I would drop venice i think. no point heading there if it's out of the way. It looks nice on the map because it looks doable."

Google maps will show you that Venice is about 450 km from Salzburg.

For future reference, note that looking at a map only works if you take scale, and travel routes, into consideration. And (of course) just knowing the distance doesn't tell you how / when you can make the trip.
