Must see Greek Islands?
 

Can someone please tell me what are the must see Greek Islands? I am going to Athens and Santorini and would like to fit in one more island? Any advice out there?

In the neighborhood of Santorini are Ios, Naxos and Paros, all on the same ferry line. Folegandros, Amorgos, Anafi and Sikinos are also close by but might not be so convenient ferry-wise depending on when you plan to travel. Crete is just 75 miles south of Santorini and has the most to see and do of those mentioned here.

I loved Paros and Naxos, more than Santorini even (though Santorini has got the views!). I'd recommend either one!

Different islands offer different kinds of experiences. What is "must see" for me, may not be for you. What kinds of things do you like to do? What are your expectations, in other words, what will you be disappointed if you don't see or do?

Why must you visit another island? What about the rest of mainland Greece? Delphi? Thessaloniki? Nafplio? Inner Mani? There is more to Greece than just Athens and the islands.

I suggest you look at a guide book of the islands and pick one that sounds suitable for your tastes. It all depends if you want something quiet, lively, or whatever. Ios is a party island, Mykonos is beautiful bit very busy and somewhat expensive, Syros is much less commercialised. Nearer to Athens, Poros is a lovely island, Aegina is also nice and only about an hour from Athens, Hydra has a lovely town. There are ofcourse many, many more.

Paros, Naxos, and Mykonos are on your circuit and are all unique. However, I'd opt for Amorgos which will offer a great contrast to nearby Santorini. It's devoid of package tourism and commercial development. Stay in the Aegiali bay area and enjoy a fantastic beach, quaint villages, and awesome hikes.

How many days do you have to "fit in one more island?" What are your interests? All the above suggestions are worthy of consideration, but for different reasons. Some islands are rather difficult to reach, and that's why they are little touched by mass tourism. Amorgos, for example, has only one or two ferries per day, and no direct connections with Santorini.

Most p[eople simply think of the Cyclades and forget the northern island in the Sporades groupo, such as Skiathos...they tend to be much greener and more lush. Though Ios is pleasant. One I've always wanted to visit is Amorgos.
