Must see
New Basilica and adjoining complex at Stary Lichen, Poland. Unbelievable! May be better than Salt Mine...an opposite of Oswiecim. An example of what Poles can build or create..world class!!!

Hi G,
Would you mind giving us a bit more detail? |
We visited the Sanctuary of the Church of St. Mary the 4th of July. The site is in the village of Stary Lichen. Legend/Belief is that the Virgin Mary appeared here and requested that a church be built. It is and has been built. The latest expansion is the basilica. Finishing work is still proceeding. The grounds are beautiful. The gold dome and tower are visible as you drive in from Konin. Lots of parking. No charges to enter. No soliciting. All of the visitors seem to be Polish. The hall of the dome is partly finished but open. Visitors were praying and looking and taking pictures. My wife was more impressed with the old church. It is an example of Polish Roman Catholicism.

Hi G,
Thanks. I have a much better picture of what you saw. |
How far is it from Warsaw? Can you get there by metro?
Thanks. |
We travelled 2 hours by car from Lodz. 130 kilometers. Inquire in Warsaw about bus. Lots of money..hire car and driver. Or take train to nearby city and then locate local bus to "stary lichen".
|
Thanks Gsteed! I will do that.

Photos of Lichen sanctuary can be found here :
http://www.poczta-polska.pl/mw/2000-20.htm#Stary_Lichen Unfortunately they are 2 years old and the building is still undeer construction (missing 92m high tower etc). But this will give you a good idea anyway. |
Update...Tower is complete as is Basilica. Grounds are beautiful and "restful". No beggars or solicitations. An awesome edifice of what dedicated humans can do!
