Must-buy in Greece?
What souvenir best represents Greece to you? What should I buy on my trip next month??
|
The jewelry is lovely and the worry beads that you see everyone carrying are really interesting (I like the ones with the charm to warn off the evil eye). Olive oil products (soap, lotion, etc) are universally available and good. My favorite souvenirs were the honey and olive oil we brought home, and a fantastic earthenware vase with painting depicting scenes from the Iliad.

Gold or silver jewellery from Ilias Lalaounis. His designs will leave you breathless.
Honey, especially if you can get the honey that comes from Rodos because it has a unique flavor. Sandals in the Plaka. Thingorjus |
Can't wait! Thanks for the replies.

An inflatable model of the Parthenon that lights up. I've never seen one the many times I've been to Athens. But I want one!

Hi
I bought a hand painted ceramic plate (about the size of a dinner plate), the design of which was copied by the artist from that used on an ancient Greek urn (she showed me a photo of the urn). The shop is in the Plaka. It's called "Artist's Work Shop" located at 7-15 Pandrossou St. |
The "evil eye"! I bought several evil eye bracelets for our neighborhood little girls. I also bought one for our Christmas tree. They are in many of the shops and are available in assorted sizes. One of my neighbors is married to someone from Greece and they go home to his island every other year. She brought an olive oil soap and an evil eye to each member of our book club. Love olive oil soap!

Hi Sallyjane -
I loved Greece! Here's what I got in the Plaka... Sandals plus another pair of shoes Tablecloth with the olive branch embroidery - everyone I know who has been there has one but they are a nice souvenir! worry beads A little dish for olives with olives painted on it A long gauzy cotton tunic in bright pink Lots of Korres stuff traditional shirts/blouses for all our nieces and nephews Lots of (tacky) fridge magnets of the Parthenon etc... but they make me smile! From other locations: a metal sculpture of an olive branch that's about 9 inches long... I have it hanging on a wall. I bought it from a nice little shop on the walk up to the funicular for Mt Lycabettus Also got a tiny silver medallion pendant there with Athena on one side and the owl on the other. I have it on a chain with a mini Eiffel tower and a miniature crown from Vienna - a little charm necklace of some souvenirs from my travels. A small tile with an olive pattern painted on it that I use as a spoon rest on my stovetop (bought on Santorini in Fira) A gorgeous sarong with beads (Santorini - Oia) My husband also bought a couple of the white cotton shirts the men there wear. Really great in hot weather We were there during the Olympics and had a holiday afterward on Santorini and Mykonos. Best souvenir is my memories! |
I bought an evil eye charm as well. Also a gold owl representing Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom. On Rhodes got a gold diamond and ruby ring and a ruby bracelet. But my favorite thing was a bedspread in the colors of the Greek flag, that beautiful blue and white. Makes me feel like I'm back in the islands.

I have 2 hand painted platters with fishing sceens painted on them. I think of our first trip to Greece every time I look at them. Greece is MAGICAL. Chris

I have a wonderful puppet on my wall from Naphlion - he is Everyman, and he is great. There are few story tellers left who use puppets. This guy was young and I hope he is still in business. Have a great trip. CJ
