Music to travel by....
 

Dear all, just a bit of fun for a Wednesday morning.<BR>I live in the UK and in August will be driving down to the Aveyron for a 3 week holiday majoring in rest and relaxation. Got a spiffy new convertible (company car chosen specifically with summer hols in mind) and am now (mentally) compiling a couple of compilation tapes for use. I'll make them up over the weekend so I can "try them out" the next hot spell we get. These tapes are really mood enhancers and will supplement the usual plethora of CDs in the glove box. <BR>Therefore i'm thinking about 2 tapes: "Driving" & "Summer Sounds". <BR><BR>"Driving" (Bouncy, pacey, driven) to include:<BR>R Dean Taylor, Moby Grape, Long Ryders, Whiskeytown, Arlo Guthrie, Spirit, Jefferson Airplane, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Denis Linde, Bob Mosley, Stoneground, Son Volt, Jayhawks, Michael Nesmith, Booker T & the MGs, John Stewart, Guy Clark <BR><BR>"Summer Sounds" (languid, shimmering, lazy, airy) to include:<BR>The Beach Boys, Mamas & Papas, Love, Rascals, Miles Davis, Bebel Gilberto, Lovin' Spoonful, CSN&Y, Wondermints, Terry Reid, Emitt Rhodes, Byrds, Turtles, Association, Millennium, Free Design, Judy Collins, <BR><BR>I was wondering what kind of music tapes you make for your holidays and what moods are they meant to evoke?<BR><BR>Dominic

Dominic,<BR>When I travel to the Southwest U.S. I bring a cd of Ottmar Liebert (flamenco),His music really enhances the "feel" of the SW US. <BR>Often I bring along praise and worship cds. Being a christian I like to keep my focus on the creator as I admire His creation.<BR>In the Pacific NW US I bring along Carlos Nakai (sp?) a Native American flute musician. His music is so relaxing and mood enhancing for gorgeous scenery.<BR>In europe I usually try to get a cd of traditional sounds of the country I am visiting, once again to enhance the "experience".

I also do "themed" mix tapes. I have them for Summer (lotsa Beach Boys, Monkees, Beatles and bright, sunny 60's Pop) Winter (Gimme Shelter by the Rolling Stones, Supertramp, Police, Laura Nyro, Velvet Underground, sort of harder edged and brittle stuff) Shopping (80's Pop - Blondie, Duran Duran, Pretenders, the kind of stuff you can hear cash tills singing) and Driving (Stones, Doors, Dire Straits, Bruce, well kinda driving music!). <BR>I also have a "work mix" which plays in my head (Workin' In A Coalmine, Matthew & Son, Paperback Writer) which keeps me sane when I'm bustin' a gut for the CEO.

I'm a classical lover so when I go to Europe (twice a year on average) I tend to listen to Bach and Handel mostly but save a bit of Baroque Chorale for Italy! Pachelbel, Albioni, Allegri &c. Sooths my fevered brow a treat!<BR><BR>Penny

If your try this you'll thank me. In Europe (or anywhere) buy a cd by a very successful Scots band, RUNRIG. Start with Mara or Greatest Hits, a particular song that is a backdrop for international travel is THE MIGHTY ATLANTIC. This is a big, fat, orchestral/rock band...HUGE in Europe, barely known in the States. They also have a website.

Uncle:<BR>Steve Earle is a great Texas artist though possibly with too much of a liberal bent for you. (He sings very powerfully about the injustice of the death penalty etc..)<BR>Seriously i thought as a Texan you'd have at least heard of him... he is pretty big!
