Music To Plan/Travel By
Okay, things have gotten a bit strange here lately & I thought I'd mention music to travel by.

On the way home from work last night, I had my car radio on & cranked up Sheryl Crowe's "A Change Will Do You Good" as I thought of my impending vacation in Paris. In the meantime, my cousin is intent on hearing some Edith Piaf recordings she borrowed from someone. One of my pals insists on listening (ad nauseam, I'm afraid) to Placido Domingo's rendition of "Nessun Dorma" each time he heads to Italy.

What do you listen to when you're planning your trip?

BC
|
Willie Nelson's "on the road again".
|
BC:

Marcella Bella. Whether I'm headed to Italy or not, she gets me cranked for a European vacation. Heck, she gets me cranked for a trip to the grocery store!

Great question, BC!

My music collection is huge and fairly global, so I can find something to fit nearly any international mood.

Europe is represented by everyone from the baroque/classical/romantic composers to Django Reinhardt, Stephane Grapelli, Beatles, Stones, Clapton, Kinks, Chieftains and traditional Ukrainian music. But note that my undying love for Stockholm notwithstanding, NO ABBA!

From Africa, I've got Cesaria Evora, Miriam Makeba, Johnny Clegg and Savuka, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

From Latin America: Chilenos Alberto Plaza, Inti-Illimani, and Gondwana (would you believe Chilean reggae?), Brazilian Marlui Miranda, traditional Andean music, Cubans Celia Cruz and Pacquito D'Rivera, and even a couple of Luis Miguel Napster files.

Couldn't begin to list the North American stuff...or more to the point, if I began, I'm not sure where it would end!

From France, Hors saison by Francis Cabrel - - and if I would ever remember to get around to ordering it - - Le Crabe est Erotique by Moos.

and from Ireland, Live from Patrick Street (or any of the other Patrick Street recordings - - hey can this be our Christmas wish lists?)

Stuff from Solas and Secret Garden, too...

Best wishes,

Rex
Roberta Flack, Jacques Brel, Bruce Springsteen and Frank Sinatra.

Oh, and the Three Tenors.

BC hello...

Good idea to change the topic! ;-)
Another day -- another thread. Wasn't that Paul McCartney & Wings "It's just another day..."

Well, I listen to music almost anytime, not only when preparing a trip. But a couple of records and songs definitely do remind me of some good moments such as Deep Purple in Rock ("Child in Time") during school skiing camps.

My collection is very wide as well. Here are just some of my favs I like to listen to depending on the mood:

Stones (anytime), Eric Clapton, Cream, Ten Years After, Doors, Led Zeppelin, Pretenders/UB40 (Chrissie Hynde), Supertramp, Fats Domino, John Lee Hooker.

Georges Brassens, Jacques Brel, Léo Ferré, Barbara, Patrick Bruel, Patricia Kaas, Francis Cabrel (yes, Rex)

Manu Chao, Youssou N'Dour, Ibrahim Ferrer/Ruben Gonzales, Ry Cooder, Keith Jarrett

Beethoven's symphonies, Rachmaninov's piano concertos, Gustave Mahler's symphonies, Händel's Water Music, Maurice Ravel's Bolero, Claude Debussy's La Mer, Bach's Brandenburg concertos, Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez

... and also Vivaldi, Albinoni (just like Rhonda), Bach and Chopin.

I am sure if must have forgotten some.
