Michael, several churches offer classical concerts, such as St Chappele and St Eustache, as well as the Theatre du Chatelet. You can go to the ticket office in the basement of Virgin Megastore on Champs Elysee and see lots of brochures, and buy your tickets there.

The Cluny Museum has early music concerts, some during the day. I stumbled in to the museum on my first day in Paris last year and was asked whether we wanted to stay for the concert at noon, which was free with admission to the museum. It ended up being one of the highlights of the trip, a wonderful ensemble playing on unique original instruments. The CD I bought of the group is one of the best souvenirs of the trip. I believe the times are posted on the museum's web site.

I would recommend La Sainte-Chapelle, near Notre Dame for classical music. Check out their evening music schedule and repertoire for what's playing and when. I was there last year and heard the most wonderful Bach played in its most magnificent setting (stained glass windows and all). Truly an experience!

St Julien Pauvre has excellent concert-on left bank near Seine-also heard of a church near the Pompidou that has excellent free concerts

Michael,
Check out the Olympia Theatre for rock & roll. Also check out the whatsonwhere.com website for other venues and performances close to the time you will go there.

There was a post on this recently where I named a lot of web sites to find out about performances (many where the places). I'll try to top it but it was named in the title something you wouldn't pick out -- Paris Web sites

so you can search for "web" under the "France" section and it won't be far down the findings

If you use http://www.pariscope.fr, then Musique, then par genre, then classique you see what is on for just one week, a cornucopia. Hi Michael, as measured by the number of clubs where one can hear rock 'n' roll, Parisians have not exactly embraced it. Disco/electronica/club music (and now, probably rap & hip-hop) and, of course, jazz, have always been a lot more popular.

I've never had any success finding any clubs in Paris which feature rock 'n' roll bands. (There are two clubs I know of but, unfortunately, they're both in Nice.)

The only place I could find after a quick web search is called Bus Palladium, at 6 Rue Fontaine. (see http://paris.travelape.com/nightlife/bus-palladium/ )

They're not rock 'n' roll -- more of a world music kind of sound -- but there's a wonderful French band called Lo'Jo, which I'd highly recommend seeing if you ever get the chance. They're from the town of Angers, in the Loire Valley, and they're led by a interestingly quirky keyboard player, Denis Péan, and two dynamic sisters of Algerian descent, Nadia & Yamina Nid El Mourid. I notice on their calendar (at the website below) that they happen to be playing in Paris on December 3rd, at a place called La Cigale (18ème), in case that date happens to coincide with your visit.

Good luck!

http://www.lojo.org/news/index.htm

Does anyone know the name of the church (always under construction) where they hold free concerts?

ita Nov 18th, 2002 01:51 PM

re above I meant to say the church in question is near the Pompidou

Christina Nov 18th, 2002 02:52 PM

A lot of churches have concerts in them in Paris and sometimes they are free and sometimes they are not. I suspect the church you are thinking of is St-Merri as it is near the Pompidou and they do have a lot of concerts there, sometimes free, but not always.
