Michael, several churches offer classical concerts, such as St Chappele and St Eustache, as well as the Theatre du Chatelet. You can go to the ticket office in the basement of Virgin Megastore on Champs Elysee and see lots of brochures, and buy your tickets there.

The Cluny Museum has early music concerts, some during the day. I stumbled in to the museum on my first day in Paris last year and was asked whether we wanted to stay for the concert at noon, which was free with admission to the museum. It ended up being one of the highlights of the trip, a wonderful ensemble playing on unique original instruments. The CD I bought of the group is one of the best souvenirs of the trip. I believe the times are posted on the museum's web site.

I would recommend La Sainte-Chapelle, near Notre Dame for classical music. Check out their evening music schedule and repertoire for what's playing and when. I was there last year and heard the most wonderful Bach played in its most magnificent setting (stained glass windows and all). Truly an experience!

There was a post on this recently where I named a lot of web sites to find out about performances (many where the places). I'll try to top it but it was named in the title something you wouldn't pick out -- Paris Web sites

so you can search for "web" under the "France" section and it won't be far down the findings

If you use http://www.pariscope.fr, then Musique, then par genre, then classique you see what is on for just one week, a cornucopia. For quick looking you might go to the words Choeur, Ensemble, and Orchestre. You ask about places, so I boiled down the entries under Orchestre, by showing only one concert for each place, and found these.

Salle Gaveau (8ème arr.)
Eglise de la Trinité (9ème arr.)
Le Nickel (78) Cité de la Musique (19ème arr.)
Théâtre des Champs-Elysées (8ème arr.)
Salle Pablo-Neruda (93)
Eglise Saint-Ephrem-le-Syriaque (5ème arr.)
Théâtre Luxembourg (77)
Maison de la musique (92)
Théâtre André-Malraux (95)
Opéra (91)
Théâtre municipal (77)
Salle Gaveau (8ème arr.)
Centre culturel l'Orangerie (95)
Théâtre (77)
Centre culturel (92)
Cirque d'hiver Bouglione (11ème arr.)
Châtelet -Théâtre musical de Paris (1er arr.)
Opéra-Comique - Salle Favart (2ème arr.)
Espace des arts (93)
Eglise de la Madeleine (8ème arr.)
Of course, this is just this week. Hi Michael, as measured by the number of clubs where one can hear rock 'n' roll, Parisians have not exactly embraced it. Disco/electronica/club music (and now, probably rap & hip-hop) and, of course, jazz, have always been a lot more popular.

I've never had any success finding any clubs in Paris which feature rock 'n' roll bands. (There are two clubs I know of but, unfortunately, they're both in Nice.)

The only place I could find after a quick web search is called Bus Palladium, at 6 Rue Fontaine. (see http://paris.travelape.com/nightlife/bus-palladium/ )

They're not rock 'n' roll -- more of a world music kind of sound -- but there's a wonderful French band called Lo'Jo, which I'd highly recommend seeing if you ever get the chance. They're from the town of Angers, in the Loire Valley, and they're led by a interestingly quirky keyboard player, Denis Péan, and two dynamic sisters of Algerian descent, Nadia & Yamina Nid El Mourid. I notice on their calendar (at the website below) that they happen to be playing in Paris on December 3rd, at a place called La Cigale (18ème), in case that date happens to coincide with your visit.

Good luck!

http://www.lojo.org/news/index.htm

A lot of churches have concerts in them in Paris and sometimes they are free and sometimes they are not. I suspect the church you are thinking of is St-Merri as it is near the Pompidou and they do have a lot of concerts there, sometimes free, but not always.
