museum pass
Can I buy a museum pass ahead of time? What exactly does it allow us to see and is it cost effective? Traelling with group of 4 to Paris end of Aug.

No need to buy ahead - you buy it at any museum. Not only free entrance but special entrances without waiting in often long ticket lines. Visiting two or more museums a day justifies it. If just doing the biggies like the Louvre -you can get about half off there daily after 3pm i think and on Sundays; those under 26 get discounted ticket prices so card may not be as good a deal for them. Covers all national museums - most of Parisian museums and dozens and dozens of them. The card allows you to come and go - say you go to the Orsay for a few hours and the next day you go back to see a different part - also wiht pass you'll visit museums you probably wouldn't have paid for - Rodin Museum, Picasso Museum and tons other great museums. So it depends on how many museums you want to see. Also good at Versailles - a major cost that helps warrant the pass along with preferentail entrance there i believe. Carte des Musees has a web site if you Google it. to compare prices go to a bookstore and look at Let's Go Europe or Let's Go France and they give regular entry prices for major museums.

At the heading in this thread is simply "museum pass" I thought I would add the fact that museum entry in Ireland is free in the 3 branches in Dublin and the one in Mayo. See www.museum.ie. The National Gallery of Ireland is free too except the area for special exhibitions-see www.nationalgallery.ie

I would advise you to really look at what museums you would see in a 3 day frame. The Orsay always has a line. When we went last fall we bought the pass but I don't think we came close to getting the "good" out of it. We hired Michael Osman for doing the high points of the Louvre and the Orsay, on the same day. It was a terrific use of time.
August might not be as crowded either, although maybe other French folk come to Paris on their holidays at that time. Definitely don't buy it in advance--get at the Metro when you buy your carnet or whatever. |
