Musee Marmottan

I would like to know if anyone who has visited the Marmottan thinks that 90 minutes is enough time for a visit there.

The museum opens at 11 and I want to make a lunch reservation in the 16th for 1pm, and think I would like to have a half hour to get to the restaurant.

Do you think 90 minutes is adequate?

I think 90 minutes might a little tight - depending on where you want to focus your time. The two upper floors are set up like a nice house museum - art, furniture, etc. Then the basement level is the large collection of Monet paintings. If you are reallty just planning to see the Monet's, then 90 would be fine. Or maybe an hour with Monet and then a 30 minute dash through the house.

I spent 2.5 hours there and was happy w/ that much time - but i <i>might</i> have been able to manage in 90 mins to 2 hours. 90 mins would be a bit of a rush though.

Maybe we should go after lunch. I am going to try to book the 55euro lunch at Table de Joel Robuchon, but we aren't the types to linger over wine. We will probably spend a couple of hours at lunch, then we could go to the museum.

We have ballet tickets that night, 7:30 I think. So that would give us more time, and we could walk off lunch. The museum closes at 6, so if we did lunch first, then the museum, we could easily make it to the Opera Garnier in time for the show.

Do you think it would be better to go after lunch?

I do think we will go to the museum after lunch.

There is a special exhibit (Monet: The Impressionist Eye) until February 15, so that may make it a bit more crowded than usual, in which case 90 minutes may not be enough time. You may find yourself having to wait until others move on to have your turn at a good view, especially if you plan to go during a weekend. I always find that weekday late afternoons are the least crowded.

I think after lunch is a great idea - you won't have to worry about being rushed. If for any reason you can't get in at Joel Robuchon, try La Gare. A converted train depot right near the La Muette metro stop, and about a 5 - 7 minutes walk to the Marmottan. Great food and a great adaptive reuse of an old building.

We spent about 2 to 2 1/2 hours there as well. If I'm not mistaken, they have a great collection of illuminated manuscripts which I love.

This is all very helpful. We are planning on Wednesday, February 11. I think we would get to the museum by 3:30, which would give us two and a half hours before they close.

Kir, I'm going to look La Gare. This is sort of our splurge meal and I like the idea of a top restaurant at lunch for a better price than dinner.

Last time in Paris we did Le Grand Vefour for lunch and had a very nice time.

Just to add to what others said: I went to the Marmottan twice in October because I only had an hour to spend the first time and it wasn't enough. I love the Berthe Morisot paintings upstairs; it is hard to see so much of her work in the U.S. It's one of my favorite museums...the Monets are fabulous. Enjoy!

When do you leave on your trip, Deb? I remember when you first started writing about it, and it seemed so far away and now it's almost here!

And when you take the metro to La Muette stop in the 16th, follow the museum signs through a lovely park to the Marmottan!

I was totally charmed by this museum! You will be glad that you gave yourself more time to go through!

I think &quot;La Table de Joel Robuchon&quot; is a Michelin two star restaurant. It looks like you are planning to spend two hours for lunch -- is it realistic even if you don't linger over wine?

I think you might need more time for lunch AND more time for the Marmottan. I love the Marmottan, and the neighborhood around it. I have always spent more than 2 hours there and would recommend you do it in the afternoon after lunch and plan to linger a bit.

That said, I'm kind of a slow museum person, as well as a slow food person.
