Talk about a hole in the wall museum.

So Erasme is a great theologian and was a fan of medicinal herbs. And more.
He stayed in a house in Anderlecht, Brussel, Belgium.

This house, built in the 15 century I think is absolutely gorgeous.
A must see hole in the wall, that every Belgian knows of course. Once he read Keren post...

The house is still fully decorated, with decorated leather panels on the walls, patterned glass in the windosw, tiles abrouring lion's (Belgian sympbol) on the tiles of the hearths (fireplaces, correct ?) and wooden floor. Just superb. A garden is attached to the house and is nicely tended. Today is 23rd of march, so not that many plants in bloom save the 'jonquilles'. A medicianl square is displayed with the name of the plants.

Visit is nearly for free : 1,25 € and includes the beguinage.

The Beguinage is a slighlt older house than Erasmus' : built in 1252. Beguinages were usually a group of houses, walled, that would welcome mostly women living alone. They would congergate together in some kind of a community, eat together and keep an eye on each other. Contrary to certain beliefs beguinages are not related to religion, but of course at the time everybody was catholic. No protestants here. Total disaster the protestants. We killed them all, burned them or send them elsewhere like in the Netherlands.

So bow before going through a door, people were small in 1252. The beguinage is the smallest of Belgium and in perfect condition.

Neighbourhood. Anderlecht is a popular area of Bruxelles, and this specific area is just splendid. It is the Bruxelles of my youth, no new buildings or nearly and old houses, now preserved. Old beautiful flemsih houses, with red bricks and their typical frontons.

Lots of small restaurants on the palce, and the church looks beautiful. There is a funeral going on, so I'll wait some before before going inside.

You make it seem worthwhile to visit, WoinParis. I'll be visiting my Son and granddaughter in Belgium in September, but I doubt we will get to Brussels. I'll put it on my bucket list, though.

I have several souvenirs about this guy Erasmus. There're Erasmus scholarship in Europe which have benefited many students. Then, during the first time I explore the Netherlands on my own, the first thing I saw (after the train station) was the Erasmus bridge, then some note saying how great this guy Erasmus was. I'll surely drop by this museum when I go to Anderlecht.

Thanks, Wo. So...a must visit for my trip next month, then. I'm excited, haven't been to Brussels for 15 years now and have many good memories from previous visits, as well. A 3-day visit is short but I have other places to visit on this trip (France, Holland) and will come back, but it will not take me 15 years this time...(for Gent it will be a 19-year absent, can't wait for that one as well)
