Murillo in Seville's Barrio Santa Cruz
 

Many years ago I stayed in the Seville's Murillo in the Barrio Santa Cruz. <BR>I have been reading warnings about the Barrio due to some assaults and robberies. <BR>Does anyone has any information on the safety of the Barrio? <BR>Any feedback on the Murillo? Last time (over 14 years ago) I loved the place <BR>Thanks

I was in Seville in 1996, a little since you were there. Stayed at the Murillo. It was a bit drab, but certainly cheap and the location could not be beat. We did not spend much time in our room, so it really didn't matter. We heard about robberies, but had no problems ourselves. Apparently, due to the narrow winding streets muggers can grab your bag/camera etc and take off down the maze of streets and be gone. As in all major cities, if you just keep your valuables hidden or in a safe place and avoid really dark alleys, etc. you will be okay. I would definately stay in Barrio Santa Cruz if you can.

Been there a few times over the past few years ,only ever had one problem person, who I was able to deal with.This person was literally ,actually, foaming at the mouth & made a grab at my pockets.His girfriend was screaming at him to stop & he was obviously desperate. <BR>Late at night you have to be careful in any city in the world ,they all have their junkie populations now. <BR>The barrio Santa Cruz is mostly pretty safe, less so late at night, but it is silly to carry bags of stuff you don't need in such a place - theres nothing much to buy, all you need is money for the cafes, keep your camera hidden till you need it.Its worth the risk, anyway I think what happens is grab-and-run upsetting but not violent. <BR>Dont try parking a car with non-Seville plates though, that IS asking for trouble. <BR>Still not as bad as Barcelona!

Thanks for all of the feedback. <BR>Yes, I am (we are) cautios in any place even in the US. I was born in Peru and my wife visits there every so often, so we know the precautions to take and the areas to avoid. Sad to hear about Barcelona. When I was there, I was made aware of the problems in the Ramblas area but I never saw any problems. But again, we see so many people just asking to be robbed.

We stayed in Barrio Santa Cruz last week (only a block or so from the Murillo). No problems at all. The major inconvenience is that parking is in a garage about a five minute walk away. My wife tried to park the car and walk back and it took her three hours! If you are driving, get good directions to the parking BEFORE you get there.

Barry - we're looking to stay in Santa Cruz for a night next June - what hotel did you stay in? I remember from when I lived there about 10 years ago that there was a nice hotel right in Santa Cruz with a pool on the roof, but I can't remember the name.
