Munish S-Bahn/U-Bahn Questions and Advice Needed

Please help...We are so confused. We will be in Munich for one week. We don't know if we should buy a week pass for all of the 16 rings or should we buy 2 3 day and 1 one day pass for the 4 inner rings. I guess I need to know if there is a lot to see and do in the outer rings? Would it be worth the extra money for the week 16 ring pass? I've looked at many S-Bahn and U-Bahn web sites and I'm still confused. Thank You for any and all advice.

susie2,

You didn't indicate what your plans are to sight-see. Unless you plan to be really busy, I would by my S-Bahn and U-Bahn tickets as needed.

There is so much to see in Munich just by walking around. However, the S-Bahn and U-Bahn are very easy to navigate, even for a beginer.

Keep in mind that on weekends on many German city urban networks - u-bahn and s-bahn, trams, buses, all included there are ridiculously cheap weekend passes often good for several individuals traveling together, even if unrelated. These off-peak passes intended to encourage folks to go by mass transit can pay for themselves even if doing a few trips. Recently in Berlin in the tourist office, I overheard the tourist office staffer try to explain to three Japanese young women who spoke not one iota of German or English that rather than each one of them buying a single ticket to their destination they were going to that it would be cheaper for them to buy a pass that would then also be valid for unlimited travel all weekend for all three. They couldn't comprehend, but on weekends in German towns you can buy ridicuously cheap passes, that may even be good for travel over a wide region. Oh well, just a though. Seems there's not much in the Munich area outside in inner city of usual tourist interest except Dachau.

The weekly pass (Monday through Sunday) for all 16 rings costs 39 Euros. The same pass for the 4 inner rings is 13.60 Euros. You would do better to get the pass for the 4 inner rings, and then if you want to go to, say, Dachau on one day, buy a separate ticket for that trip.

Besides the excellent advice to get the horribly cheap weekend pass, for the weekdays look into the stripe tickets. They give you a discount because of the amount, then you use them for as many zones as you need when you need. Long trips just use up more zones, the small ones only two stripes.

Thank You so much to everyone for all the info and advice. I think we have it figured out now. All that's left to do is dream of pretzels and BEER-BEER-BEER.

Susie -- Don't forget to check out the Augustiner Keller beer garden near the Hauptbahnhof. I consider it one of the best beers in Munich.

Have a great time!!!((b))

At all Munich U bahn stations, there are machines that sell Streifenkarte.
You are required to cancel tickets in a time/date machine for each ride before boarding the train.
There is no conductor who comes around and checks the tickets. Sometimes there is a "control" and stiff penalties if you do not have cancelled cards.

I recall that the cost is 1 ticket if you are traveling less than 4 stops.
If you travel 4 or more stops within the city you cancel 2 tickets per person.
If you travel more than that, you purchase a supplement if you don't have enough tickets left. I bought 10 the Streifenkarte a coupole of times last year and stamped them as I went.
When we went to the airport, I had to buy a supplement because I did not have enough cards left.

The U bahn, S bahn, and street cars are all on the same system.

This year, we simply walked to our objective because it was a beautiful day.
