Munich with a car?

We may be in the Munich area and find we have time to spend a day and a night there- however at that point we will be driving a rental car. How difficult with this prove to be and is there a hotel perhaps on the outskirts that would be better for us to stay at ( with a car to park) and see a little bit of Munich ? Is driving in Munich impossible or just tricky? Any hotel recommendations? Thank you again!!

Driving in München is easy. I would recommend staying at a hotel in the city center. The better hotels have their parking garages; otherwise you will find enough parking garages which are open to the public.

for hotel search, use www.hrs.de

If you want to stay on the outskirts, I recommend this hotel (with a nice beergarden):

It is located directly at an S-Bahn station with a fast connection into the city center.

Munich, thanks to WW2, like many German cities has for Europe broad streets even in the city center.

driving in munich is easy AS LONG AS you're familiar with the streets and layout.
i suggest you stay at the outskirts and take the s-bahn to the centre.
Or stay at the kempinski hotel downtown which is relatively easy to find and get to from the autobahn. they have parking facilities and is in the centre.

Hi
We stayed in the center of Munich with a car a few years back, driving was okay, at the Hotel Acanthus, near Sendlinger Tor I think. It was a short walk then to the old center of town. We did Dachau on our way into the city. The hotel has a parking garage and we just left it there and walked everywhere. It was a very nice place and they were very helpful.

Driving in Munich is neither impossible nor even very tricky. There are a bunch of hotels right outside the most central area (we stayed in a Hilton I think that was only a 10 minute walk from the central square and had a huge garage) that have garages or parking available.

When you search just check for hotels that list garage or parking.

My husband and I stayed at Motel 1 very near the historical center this past October. We had a car and I think we paid 15 euro for parking and 99 euro for the room. It was a basic hotel room, but clean and comfortable. Actually, the bathroom had one of the nicest showers of our trip. The location was fabulous, just a short walk to the Glockenspiel.

Despite parks like the English Garden, Munich is the most densely built German city. Which means you can stay just outside the centre and get into the centre of town quickly by U-Bahn (underground), tram or bus. The S-Bahn, which has a number of routes that go further out also provides a frequent and rapid service. As with driving in any city where you don't know the roads, locals in the rush hour tend to be impatient, so try to avoid driving to an inner-city hotel during 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m.!
