Munich - where to drop car?
 

I am planning a driving trip thru Southern Germany in late April and will be ending with a few days in Munich before flying from there to Hamburg. I don't think we want to drive in Munich. Is there a convenient and easy to locate place to drop the car at or near a train station on our way from Garmisch to central Munich? I'm thinking this would be easier than driving all the way into the center of Munich to drop the car.

I do not have the answer to your question. I can just tell you NOT to drop off at the airport. We made that mistake last summer- what a waste of time for us!

Our car reservation hasn't been made yet, but Sixt seems to have good rates. My decision on rental agency may be made on the most convenient location for dropoff. I probably need to get a driving map & compare that with the train routes and then the rental locations. Dropping the car south of Munich seems to be such a good idea I thought probably someone had done it.

The best place imho would be "Pasing" station.

If you are staying at a large hotel in Munich, you might want to drive to the hotel and then have the hotel arrange for the car to be picked up by the rental agency. (I did this in Frankfurt and I avoided a lot of hassle.)

Sixt has a Garmisch office. You could just drop it off there and ride the train into Munich. I think that a Bayern Ticket will get upto 5 people from G. to Munich for about 26 euros.

TXgalinGA, I'm guessing that dropping off the car at the airport was a mistake for you because you were going to visit Munich but if we're driving from Salzburg to Munich to fly home it wouldn't be difficult to drive to Munich airport to drop off the car would it?

Oh gosh- if you are flying out right after you drop off your car, then yes!! Drop it off at the airport. We were visiting Munich and it was a massive waste of time to drive all the way out to the airort and then take the train back in.

As IRA suggested, check with your rental agency. Sixt has several offices in the city. It really is a matter from where you are coming from to Munich. If from Nuernberg, Regensburg, the airport would probably be the best. From Stuttgart, a drop-off near the Hauptbahnhof wouldn't be so bad. From Salzburg, I probably would take the Munich by-pass and take the train from the airport, unless places like Ottobrunn have drop-offs.

What car company is the best as far as pricing to go with. I always thought Autoeurope would be the best but for 13 days of a compact with no air it's over $600, that seems steep to me.

Also, now you have to pay extra for the CDW.

The big rental companies all own low cost companies which rent a smaller selection of cars at fewer locations and only manual for little money. (Opel Astra...) Prices off peak season are about 15€/day including CDW but only incl. 100km/day.
This way, they get the "money sensitve" peolpe as customers too :-)
