Munich, Vienna, Salzburg - 2 weeks time too much?
We are in the early stages of planning and are thinking of flying into Munich, spending 3 or 4 days, then on to Salzburg for 4 days and ending in Vienna for another 5 days.
We will be travelling by train and do not plan on renting a car. So we would mainly be staying within the city, with perhaps the odd day trip by train, bus, etc to other locations. We are wondering if there is enough to see in each of these locations or should we add another city to the mix. Any suggestions much appreciated! |
Absolutely NOT! There is much to see in each of these 3 cities. Plan some day trips. Outside of each. Find some time to relax in each. You'll enjoy it more than trying to cram every minute of your trip with another city.
3 or 4 days in Munich is not enough for sure. Do 5 days with a trip to Fussen. Do 4 days in Salzburg. Do a day at the salt mines. Spend the rest of your time in Vienna. Go see the Alps or do a mini cruise on the Danube. Just suggestions. That's manageable. |
That is a great trip for using train travel, those cities are easily connected and even have great daytrips you can do with train or bus.
For good daytrips Munich: Dachau, Nuremberg, Fuessen Salzburg: Obersalzburg, Salt Mines Vienna: Melk Abbey, Bratislava I would do 4 or 5 days in Munich if you plan on doing any daytrips. If you want to take a day from Salzburg you could stop in Hallstatt between Salzburg and Vienna. |
From Salzburg, you can take a 50 minute bus ride to St. Gilgen on Wolfgangsee. You can then ride a steam paddlewheeler on the lake over to St. Wolfgang, a charming town with great shops and lovely cobblestone streets. Make your way to the Schafbergbahn Station and ride an old steam train up to the top of the Schafberg Mountain where, on a clar day, you can see 4 or 5 of the surrounding lakes.

There is plenty to do in those cities plus day trips. Be sure to visit Mad Ludwig's Castles, Melk Abbey near Vienna (I think you can get there by boat as well as bus).

Thanks all for the replies...looks like we will stick with the three locations.
I will add your suggestions to my growing list of things to see and do. Now to book the flights and get the hotels figured out. I may have some questions on accomodations... In general what kind of weather can we expect mid to late August? |
