Munich-Vienna-Prague
 

My son is getting married in Munich this June. We are going the week before the wedding and will spend it getting to know our daughter-in-law's family. They have a chalet somewhere near Innsbruck and plan on taking us there for a couple of days.

We are staying ten days after the wedding and want to go to Vienna and then Prague. We have looked at a few travel sites and both cities appeal to us. DH loves museums, architecture and history. I love history, and experiencing the modern day culture of the countries we visit.

We will use the Internet, tour books and our new in-laws for information, but I have always received great travel advice here and wondered if anyone can suggest must sees, reasonable hotels, $100-$150 euros per night, or any other travel tips for these two cities.

You may want to go Munich to Prague by direct bus - quicker than trains and then end up in Vienna - which may have more flight possibilities to return home and I think your overall travel time would be significantly less doing it this way than the way you have - anyway for train or bus fares from Munich to Vienna or Prague go to www.bahn.de - the German Railways web site for schedules and online discounted fares - deep discounts over regular walk up fare but those tickets are also non-changeable from one specific train and cannot be refunded and must be booked weeks in advance as they are sold in very limited numbers. Early bird doth indeed get the proverbial worm here.
For lots of great info on trains in Eastern Europe and Germany I always spotlight these super IMO sites - www.seat61.com (great info on getting the discounted fares); www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com. You can always just show up and get on trains but you can save a bundle if you can lock yourself into a certain train weeks in advance and do not desire flexibility to later change.

Thanks, PalenQ. We can go to Prague first, but we already have our return flight set from Munich. We are planning on leaving Munich, Monday morning after the wedding on Saturday. We fly out of Munich the following Monday.

We have researched euro passes, and thanks for the link to the German Railways site. You might be interested in this airline tidbit. We went on a German website to book our tickets and were able to get them $700. cheaper than the airline site and we are flying out of Lansing, which is usually a lot more expensive, instead of Detroit.

These cities are wonderful and should suite your interests well! It's been a while, but the guide books I found most useful for them were Fodor's, Frommer's, and Baedeker's.

I second the recommendation for booking.com - I've been using it without problem for many years now.

Good deals in Prague are flats in the city center - and if you do not have bookings these can be easily arranged upon arrival in the train station thru an accommodation booking office.

Please tell me how you were able to book airline tickets so much less expensive. What site did you use? I have tried everything under the sun and still cannot get there (Open jaw - JAX to CDG, ZHR to JAX) under $1200.
