Munich to Vienna

Can't remember if I've already posted this question or not, and not sure how to see what I have posted. New to Fodors, but so happy to have found it. Ok, my question, has anyone taken a train from Munich to Vienna? How long and what rail would be the best?

Next question, can anyone tell me if there is a train that runs to and from Bad Gastein Austria to Venice Italy? How far would this journey be and what would the best rail be for this one?

Thanks

you can use the GermanRail site www.bahn.de to check schedules

Perhaps the best connection Bad Gastein-Venice leaves around 8:42 AM with a change in Villach and takes about four hours or so; other timings can take much longer.

Again, you can find out all that information on the bahn.de site

If you plan on much train travel in Europe I suggest you learn how to use the various rail web sites which give you complete schedule information.

http://www.railfaneurope.net/frameset.html

If you will click on the link listed above you will soon see an icon for each national rail system in Europe. Pick the country you want to consult the schedules.

I travel mostly in Western Europe and use the German, Swiss, Austrian, and French systems the most.

The answer to your Bad Gastein question can be readily found at oebb.at

The train leaves Bad Gastein at 8:42 and arrives in Venice at 13:26 with a change in Villach, Austia. Or you can leave in the afternoon at 16:42 and arrive in Venice at 21:20.

All the other connections take a lot longer, like 9 hours, and don't really arrive any sooner.

You may have to use European names in some cases like Praha for Prague, Venedig or Venezia for Venice, Wien for Vienna, etc. Depends on the system you are using and whether or not it recognizes English city names.
