Munich to Venice - Train or Plane??
We will be going to Venice from Munich. There is a 6 hour train ride that leave at 11:30 a.m. Would it be more scenic to take the train or not worth the time?
|
While the flight itself is a short one, once you factor in all of the extra time that flying entails (getting there 2 hrs. beforehand, time to and from the airport, etc.) it is not that big of a time savings vs. rail. The train trip through the alps is very scenic.
That having been said, I would take the night train instead. It leaves Venice around 11:30 PM and arrives in Munich 6:30 AM the next day. This gives you another day to enjoy in either Venice or Munich. Given the choice, I'd rather trade a day on the train (scenic though it may be) for an extra day on the ground seeing the sights. |
On the Hope Bonnhof Scale of Scenic Trains (1 not to 10 super!) this route clocks in at 7)

I'd take the train - although I have not done this route, trains seem to be a lot more convinient and comfortable than planes, and since you wouldn't really save time by flying, I'd go with the train.

The 11:30 departure may very well be the better one since others(earlier and later) require a change in Verona.

There are some videos on youtube about taking night trains.

Travmimi may have a point about night trains. Consider taking a night train, book a sleeper car and save the cost of a hotel room and a day of traveling.

I believe the video on youtube is called - italian train torture. It's good to see before you book.

Hi 2happyhills
I am going to chime in against the crowd here. While generally I would prefer train travel to air travel, on our upcoming trip to Italy and Germany in May/June I booked a hlx.com flight from VCE to MUC. I know it's the opposite direction, but the point is this - The train would have been about 100E per person ( I have three travelers) and the flights rang up at 100E - TOTAL - for all three travelers. Besides that, we will leave Venice early and be in Munich by 10AM. That feat is not possible with the train unless you take a night train. For the record, we did not consider a night train as I have trouble sleeping in beds - a train would simply be an all night oddessey for me! H |
