Munich to Venice night train help

Hi,

I’m trying to buy a night train from Munich direct to Venice on Sep 1st (Sunday). It says nothing is available

Does anyone have experience with this?

Is it likely that’s there will never be a train that night? Or does the ticket become available as we get closer to Sep 1?

Munich Ost dp 21.54 - Venice SL ar 8.34

It's horribly expensive, but it's bookable

When you “it says nothing available”, what do you mean by “it”. My first stop for trains originating in Germany would be the German RR website bahn.de where i see a 65 euro price for Sept 2. So if you have some flexibility then check other dates. I find it best to always go to the source, which in this case is the nightjet site mentioned above, but that’s not necessarily well know.

Try taking a day train from Munich to Vienna. Then Nightjet from Vienna to Venice. We've done Prague-Vienna, spent the day in Vienna and then took the Vienna Nightjet to Venice a couple of times and loved it.

this seems like a solution, but would be an additional 4 hour east ride … requiring a night stay in Vienna

I don’t know, maybe should fly from Munich to Venice instead?

Why a night's stay in Vienna? I'm seeing train service throughout the day between Munich and Vienna. You could even get to Vienna in the afternoon and board the Nightjet that evening to Venice.

I wonder if it’ll be too much train travel

4hrs to Vienna, change train and then another 8-10hrs overnight to Venice

would flying from Munich to Venice be a better experience?

Hopefully, you'll be sleeping for most of the Vienna to Venice leg. We get a sleeper compartment and bring wine for a nightcap. The porter brings breakfast in the morning and you arrive in the heart of Venice. We look at the cost as being a combination of train ticket and overnight hotel. Flying is probably cheaper and faster, but we enjoy the experience of the Nightjet.

I believe Nightjets to Italy have now opened for sale from 10 September onwards, maybe as far as October..
The site you should be using for Nightjets is https://shop.oebbtickets.at/en/ticket

I cannot understand why you want to do the detour via Vienna

I suggested the reroute through Vienna because the OP could not find availability on the Nightjet from Munich to Venice. It appears those have now opened up, so certainly,Munich to Venice is preferred.

There is actually availability from both origines, Stuttgart - Munich and Vienna.
The sleeping cars from Vienna run via Salzburg where they are added to the train from Stuttgart - Munich.

If you want to reach the overnight train at Vienna, you have to leave Munich at 15.48.
If you leave Munich at 15.34 by direct Verona bound train, you will reach Venice at 11pm.

I found a train MUN > VEN on Sep 2nd at 23:54

I'm trying to book the entire sleeper cabin for just the two of us. But it appears that I need to buy all 3 seats of a sleeper cabin in order to guarantee that we have a private cabin? But when I select a 3rd person, it requires that I enter a name.

If someone has recently booked a private cabin for 2 people, can you explain how you did this?

Are you only looking at night trains for the "experience"? FWIW, I find sleeping on trains nearly impossible with the many stops (more than one an hour on this route), the narrow bed and the noise... reminiscent of a tiny dorm room. Just not worth the "experience" to me, but it's your trip. The train you're looking at arrives Venice at about 8:30 a.m. I'd want immediately to check in at the Venice hotel, take a shower and then a nap.

If you took a day train, you'd enjoy some beautiful mountain scenery for at least half of the journey.

The nightjet website that neckervd posted upthread offers the option to reserve the entire sleeper cabin for two people. I don't know how much you pay for the third/empty spot, but I highly doubt it can be reserved for free...
