Munich to Stuttgart -- is the S-Bahn the way to do this?

We are looking for the least expensive train travel from Munich to Stuttgart (same day travel).

My husband found something on DB Bahn, but the price was high (nearly $200 E round trip for 2 people).

Is the S-Bahn the way to go (cheaper, slower, faster)?

No, S-Bahn is just the name for local trains in German cities.

When are you hoping to travel? Cheap tickets on bahn.de sell out quickly, so the further ahead you book the better.

You don;t say when you are going - and if it's soon the discounted tickets may be gone. But the D bahn site is showing rates as low as 29 euros second class.

And I may be wrong but I though the S bahn is merely a suburban train system for munich - not country wide.

Hi see,

Looking at www.bahn.de right now.

For this Wednesday, the lowest discount fare is 24E.

Ah, I see what it is...he put in "standard fare" as we are not booking in advance. Actually the outward journey is 200E for the two of us! So 400E round, trip? I must be doing something wrong.

I see standard fare Munich HBF to Stuttgart HBF is between 47 to 53 euros per person, 2nd class.

Okay, I think I've figured it out.

Standard outward/return journey for two is 200 Euros. Initially I couldn't see the return journey fee included.

What does HBF stand for? (city centre?)

Thanks for the help.

Thank you. I never did well learning those transportation abbreviations. :)
