Munich to Salzburg Train Question
 

I will be flying into Munich on 30 October at 6:50 A.M. I want to book a train from Munich Airport to Salzburg that leaves at 8:30 A.M.

Assuming my flight arrives on time, do you all think that I will make the 8:30 A.M. train or should I book a later train just to be safe.

This is my first trip to Germany and Austria so I am not familiar with Die Bahn trains. Thanks in advance.

I just returned from Salzburg and Munich. Our flight was delayed in NY, so we had to take a later flight into Munich. Given the number of delays this year, I wouldn't bother making a reservation at all. There are plenty trains going to Salzburg. It's really easy....you go to where they are selling tickets out of the machine. Press the screen for "English" or a flag..choose the city you are going to, it prints out your ticket. Option #2 which is cheaper is to buy a Bayern ticket. You travel second class on the regional trains. When we got there , we were tired and spoke no German, so we opted to buy our Bayern ticket for 2 euros extra from the man at the ticket counter. He was most helpful...printed the time on the ticket and told us where to go.

The Bayern Ticket is definitely the way to go. One consideration is that it is only valid on trains leaving after 9 am on weekdays.

Thanks for the advice. I will look into the Bayern Ticket since I am also going to take a day trip to Ingolstadt from Munich.

Take into consideration that the Bayern Ticket is valid on local trains only. You cannot travel on ICE, EC or IC trains with it.

Here is a quote from the bahn.de site about the Bayern ticket:

This ticket is valid from Monday to Sunday for one day of your choice from 9 a.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day (on bank holidays for the whole day) on Saturday and Sunday and bank holidays from from 0 a.m. until 3 a.m. of the following day. It can be used on all local trains (Interregio-Express, Regional-Express, Regionalbahn, S-Bahn) and the entire transport system in Bavaria as well as the Münchner Verkehrsbund (MVV) and Verkehrsverbund Nürnberg (VGN), Augsburger Verkehrs- und Tarifverbundes (AVV) and many more.

EUR 19 if you buy your ticket online or at the ticket machine. EUR 21 if you purchase your ticket at the Reisezentrum.

Based on the Thomas Cook Timetable you will have to take an S-Bahn to Munich Hbf from the airport. Departure every 10 minutes.

Then catch a train to Salzburg. There are many trains a day so don't worry about it.

You don't need a reservation on 99.9% of German trains. Just buy your ticket when you get to the station. It's more or less like a big city bus service. There is almost always a seat but if it is SRO on a Tuesday morning you should get a seat after the first or second stop.
