Munich to Rothenburg, Train, Bus or Tour?

Does anyone know what the travel time is between Munich and Rothenburg by train?
I have heard 1.5 hours and also 3 hours. I would like to take an independent tour overnight to Rothenburg and back to Munich the next morning because it doesn't seem like the sightseeing tours offer enough time to see Rothenburg (none of the tours tells you how much time you get to spend in Rothenburg itself as a lot of them go to a castle as well). Also, would I be able to find any buses you can take independently and are they worth it time wise? Would really appreciate help please!

Hi ledhead,

You can see the train journey yourself using the German rail site at

www.bahn.com

There is also a Romantic Road bus tour that you can use to follow that route --

But it only runs from April - Oct.

Have fun as you plan!

Look around, you can find a lot out by using local sites.

Try www.google.de as a way to get lots more hits about Rothenburg and places to stay.

According to the Deutche Bahn schedule, the trip by train between Munich and Rothenburg o.d. Tauber takes between 2.5 hours and 3.5 hours depending on the type of trains taken and the number of stops made.

If you can arrange your trip to travel on a weekend, you can take advantage of the excellent Happy Weekend fares. If you have to travel on a weekday, you can take advantage of the State Fares by traveling after 9am. These fares are available for up to 4 adults for only a few extra Euros. Check the "Offers" on the DB website for details.

Last summer my children made the same trip that you are planning. They traveled by train between Munich and Rothenburg o.d. Tauber, spend a night in a hostel and had 2 half-days and an evening to tour. They said it worked out great.

Thanks longhorn55. This is exactly how much time we will have. I would like to leave by train early on 7/17, tour Rothenburg that day and evening, and head back early afternoon the next day 7/18. All the tours I check either charge too much or try to get you to take their excursions and stops. I am going to look at the DB schedule and then try to book a hotel right in the middle of the town (if thats possible). Will report back. Thanks again everyone!
