munich to prague
 

Hi,

We are flying into Memmingen and plan to carry on to Munich for a few days with my family, 3 kids, and want to travel onto Prague. I have read a little here about the trains but I wonder if anyone can give me advice about this trip exaclty and the best way to get between these places.

We drove from Munich and it was a great trip. We planned it so to spend the night at a German border town called Furth i Wald (great Dragons Festival!). Then, we crossed the border very early in the AM; the idea was that trucks (trade) go in early so we (cars) were given little to no attention. It worked; the whole border crossing took about 3 minutes. That said, parking in Prague is tricky; we actually parked the car at the Hilton (stayed nearby) and use the train otherwise. If I had to do that with 3 kids on tow, I am not sure Prague would be my top choice to be honest with you. There are certainly things to do in Prague with kids, but it is a very, very crowded city with a notorious reputation around metro train stations. Just a heads-up.

For Memmingen airport - downtown Munich the easiest way is to take the shuttle bus.
The departure times are adjusted to the arriving planes (so you will not miss the bus if your plane is late).

Munich-Prague has a direct train connection, but I have not taken it yet. But there are several people here who had used that train and will probably give you good tips.

Hi; We had taken the train and it was seven hours between Prague and Munich. There may be a more direct route. By car, it takes about four hours. That would only be advisable if you are returning to Germany to drop the car off. Drop off charges can be expensive, renting in one country and dropping off in another country. As suggested, parking and driving in Prague is difficult. Border crossing was not a problem. Our second trip to Prague, we crossed over from Austria. Prague is a great walking city, but depending upon the ages of the 'kids', it could be difficult. Half of the old city is 'flat', but the other half is 'steep' walking. Prague is our favorite city. Would also suggest taking the train. If you consider renting a car, as others have said get details from the rental agency as some have restrictions/severe penalties about driving and/or dropping off in CR from Germany.

How old are your kids? If they're pre-teens or teenagers, they'll most likely love Prague. We went with our daughter's high school orchestra on a concert tour 3 yrs ago and Prague ended up being one of everyone's favorite places. Wonderful old world charm, outdoor cafes, beautiful architecture, shops, etc - plenty to enjoy for all ages.
