Munich to Paris
 

We will be spending 17 days in Europe in June visiting Rome, Venice, Munich and Paris. Asking for advice in getting from Munich to Paris. At first considered the train thinking that it might be fun and scenic but the time involved has me considering flying. Can anyone recommend sites that would show cheap airfare options?

Air France has a 89€ roundtrip permanent special from Germany with MANY flights from Munich available in June. (www.airfrance.de)

Book now, it won't get any cheaper and seats sell rather fast.

Have you actually checked the train timing and fares?

Spend some time on www.bahn.de and http://www.tgv-europe.com/en/choose-country/index.php

There is a TGV leaving at 06:20, arriving at about 12:30. If you compare that to the hassle of getting to Munich airport, queuing through security, waiting for bags at the other end and then getting from CDG or Orly (or further out) into Paris you won't save much time, if any. And you'll have a relaxed, pleasant scenic rail cruise through some classic scenery. I'm guessing about the last part, because I've driven from Munich to Paris but I've not taken the train.

If you don't want to get up that early you can choose from several later trains with a single change at Stuttgart, Cologne or Mannheim or other route choices and still get there in 7 or 8 hours.

Possibly the most pleasant way would be the direct night sleeper leaving at 22:42 and arriving at about 9:30. You'll miss the German scenery but be awake for most of the French section and save on a hotel as well. However, that looks like a fairly slow train, so it may be wise to ask if others have taken it.

If I sound a little biased, I have spent far too much time in far too many airport security queues and waiting rooms and I'm presently planning a European rail holiday myself :)

But on Air France, there'll be business travellers that will take off their shoes at every checkpoint without being asked to AND will only travel with a toothbrush and a laptop :-) :-)

We have used trains in Europe and love them, travelling is very tiring and you will be glad of a quiet day and a chance to get off your feet. We regard our train days as an enforced rest day and just kick back and enjoy the scenery.
