??Munich to Neunschwanstein

We will be in Munich in August with a tour group and would like to see Neuenschwanstein.

Is it possible to do it as a day trip??

I would hope that our tour guide wold know how but sometimes a bit of foreknowledge helps.

Thanks :-B

If you have a car a day trip from Munich is easy. We've done that.

If you are with a tour group I suspect you won't have a car and that makes its more difficult. Years ago we took a train and connected to a bus before walking the last mile or two (through driving rain) to the castle. I wouldn't do that again.

I'm sure there are ways to get a tour from Munich that takes you right to the castle but I have no experience with that.

Thousands of people make the daytrip from Munich to N'stein on any given day. Unfortunately, you cannot get any closer to the castle by car than you can by public transport.

It is easy - and cheap (22 Euros roundtrip per group of 5)- to get to N'stein by train/bus. The train takes you to Fussen in 1.5 hours. The shuttle bus from Fussen to the base of the castle takes a few minutes. From there you hike up to the castle (steep, 20 min.) or take a shuttle for a few Euros.

To get the cheap train pass, ask for a "Bayern Ticket" and leave after 9 am on weekdays or anytime on Sat or Sun.

Here is a page from the official N'stein website with transit information:

Sorry for the misinformation - by train, it's actually about 2 hours Munich to N'Stein.

It's also possible to get up to the castle from the parking lot by means of horse-drawn wagons.

I booked a tour thru my hotel. For me, it was easier because I was visiting other cities and therefore did not have time to research everything--how to get there, all the history, etc. The day tour took us to Neuschwanstein as well as Linderhof. I believe you just need to book your bus tour one day in advance. Just my 2 cents, in case you decide you prefer a bus tour!
