Munich to Lucerne in one day?

My husband and I are considering renting a car in Munich and driving to Lucerne as part of our upcoming trip this June. Is this practical in one day? We'd like to stop briefly in Fussen and also to view castles from the outside. Maybe a luge ride...

Estimates on the length of this trip without stops?

a long day if stopping at Fussen - be sure to reserve a tour before going or you could stand hours in line. without Fussen the drive is very doable, with it a long day i suspect. the train takes about 6 hours so driving could be a bit quicker or slower, depending on road conditions.

Hi MNGirl2,

According to mappy.com, the drive is 235.17 miles and will take just under four hours. Of course, there's no telling what traffic will be like!

I think there will be a hefty ($200-$300) fee if you rent a car in one country and return it in a different country, so are you returning to Germany? If not, you may want to drive to Lake Contance and drop your car in Germany, then take the train the rest of the way.

Autoeurope is only charging be about $80 to pick up in Munich and dropoff at Zurich airport.

Here's a route that I am taking but don't plan to see the castles. Taking back roads to avoide highway tolls.

I think you must also buy, if your rental car doesn't have it on, a Swiss autoroute pass that is fairly pricey to drive on Swiss autobahns - side roads are free but take forever - another cost factor to consider.
