Munich to London flight
 

Well - as much as I hate to step foot on a plane, I fear that this is the best form of transportation to get me from Munich to London. I looked at taking the train from Munich to Paris and then eurostar from Paris to Munich. (Yes, I am crazy enough to do this to avoid an airport and flight and still toying with it as much as I know it is crazy).

I looked on Whichbudget (thank you Ira) and found that EasyJet and AirBerlin fly into London Stansted.

Any difference that you can mention?

I noticed that EasyJet is about 100.00 Euros total when I add up the bag holding (do I need to do the easy bording?? I paid for that on Ryan Air and was told it was a waste).

We've taken AirBerlin from Vienna to Rome. On time departure and arrival, pleasant flight attendants, and free lunch including drinks served for that 1 hour or so flight (though my son additionally ordered a hot item from their menu, for a reasonable cost, and he finished it to the last drop!!-I also tasted it and it was goood). In fact I like the airline so much, my friends and I are taking it again this October for a flight from Munich to Rome, how's that??

Both airlines are large and dependable and will get you from A (Munich airport) to B (London Stansted airport).

Air Berlin is a more traditional full-service airline: assigned seating, soft drinks, sandwiches and newspapers are included. You can also purchase alcoholic beverages and hot food.

EasyJet on the other hand has open seating and nothing, not even bottled water, is included. Fast boarding is generally a waste, especially if a bus is used to get to the plane.

EasyJet allows you to take a standard size carry-on (55x40x20cm) aboard, with NO weight restriction (you just have to be able to lift it), but does charge EUR 7.50 for each piece of hold luggage, plus overweight fees if the combined weight of all your hold luggage exceeds 20kg.

Air Berlin has a carry-on weight limit of just 6kg (8kg if you are carrying a laptop), however allows up to 20kg of hold luggage at no extra charge.

IMO, taking the train isn't crazy if your Munich-Paris leg is the direct night train. You'll save yourself the cost of a night in a hotel and have more daylight hours for sightseeing. Booked far enough in advance (up to 90 days allowed) at www.bahn.de, you can get a Spar-Night savings fare of 49€ for a bunk in a four-person couchette.

Arrive at Paris Gare de l'Est at 06:46. Walk to Gare du Nord in plenty of time to meet the 30-minute check-in deadline and depart at 08:07.

Air Berlin is better than EasyJet. If they are the same price, go with Air Berlin.

One other thought - how much of a premium is it to fly into London City Airport? It is a much more pleasant airport, if you were trying to avoid the airport.

I would never take the train for such a long journey.

TimS - don't tempt me. I really hate to fly. A lot. I hate airports, I hate planes, I hate the entire experience. If I did not love to travel so much I would simply stop flying.

I like trains and I can sleep anywhere so the night train would work for me. However, I certainly wouldn't spend a whole day riding across Germany, France, and under the channel. Too much lost sightseeing time. And unlike you, I don't mind flying.

We do love trains, and will be spending a good amount of time traveling on them.

I will most likely fly, only because we only have 4 nights in London and I want to take advantage of the time there.
