Munich to Innsbruck
 

Could someone help me out with some information. I am traveling to Munich from Boston in Feb with some friends our plan is to arrive in Munich and take the train to Innsbruck to go skiing and then head back to Munich. My questions are regarding traveling and staying. Around how much does it cost for the train and this being my 1st time in europe do we just purchase our tickets at the airport and go? Also if there's any reccomendations on places to stay in innsbruck? we're only staying there for a day or two and we don't want to spend too much time getting to/from the mts.<BR><BR>Thanks

To the best of my knowledge, you will have to connect on the S8 to Munich Hauptbahnhof to get to Innsbruck. There is good information at http://www.munich-airport.com/english/verkehr/bahn/fs_bahn.htm<BR><BR>It's 38 minutes from Munich Flughafen to Haupfbahnhof; from there it's 1:50 to Innsbruck.<BR><BR>Yes, it is as simple as walking up to the ticket window and buying a point-to-point ticket there. For additional fare and schedule info, you can look at www.raileurope.com (but don't buy from there - - big mark-up) or www.bahn.de (will give accurate prices, but maybe not for international travel, i.e., Germany to Austria).<BR><BR>Best wishes,<BR><BR>Rex<BR>

There is also direct van service from the Munich airport to Innsbruck, which avoids the connection at the Munich Central Train Station. Details in the Munich Airport web site. Nevertheless, connecting at the Central Train Station is extremely easy and convenient (and there are numerous good fast food outlets, cafes, bars, and even an ultra modern small grocery store within the station itself). Trains to Innsbruck leave every two hours beginning at 7:30 a.m. They are Eurocity trains going to Italy, and are often railcars of the Italian State Railways.

I've never skiied in Innsbruck, I opted for St Anton for one simple reason: the ability to walk out of my room, put on my skis and ski down to the lift. I suspect this is possible in hotels outside of Innsbruck, but the people I had been skiing with didn't like the hassle of a large town.

You can take either of the trains from the airport into town. The S1 and the S8 both go to Hauptbahnhof.

It is not necessary to go to Hauptbahnhof. You can take the S8 (but not S1) from M&uuml;nchen Flughafen Terminal to M&uuml;nchen Ost and change train there. EuroCity train to Innsbruck every two hours from 7:39 (arr 9:22) to 19:39 (21:22).<BR>http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/e

Chris:<BR><BR>Are you committed to Innsbruck? I would highly recommend sking in Garmisch Germany. Closer, and there are great places to stay near the slopes. Innsbruck is more a large town ( but a nice one at that!) but Garmisch will feel like a ski-town. What are your plans?<BR>John

Ditto John. Easy access to lifts, and a fine ski town. I stayed at the Zugspitze Hotel and loved it.
