Munich to Fussen
 

Am in the middle of mapping our driving part of Germany. We're thinking of driving from Munich in the morning, visiting Neuschwanstein and Linderhoff during the day then staying the night in Fussen. Are both castles too much to see in one day? I understand that apart from a charming town, Fussen doesn't warrant staying two nights.

It all depends on what your interest and stamina is. It took me some 2 hrs to drive Munich to Fuessen, and already the approach to the mountains is quite pretty, worth stopping for photography.
Now you can get a gorgeous view of Neuschwanstein from the flat country just north. Or in the summer you can try to park your car, wait in line, and spend at least a couple of hours visiting the castle. Fuessen city center is also worth seeing. And if you're the hiking type, there is plenty to do. So why the rush?
Linderhoff castle is elsewhere; do you mean Hohenschwangau?

Just got back from Neuschwanstein today. We arrived in Schwangau last evening driving from Dachau and stayed there in an Inn at the base of the village with views to both castles. It took us about 2 hours to get to Schwangau from Dachau which was 20 minutes longer than projected due to some re-routing and exit closures. You can check the mileage from Munich but I'd add in a bit for such things.

Fussen is the town before Schwangau which is the location where the castles actually are - by castles I mean Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau. It's about a 5-10 minute drive from downtown Fussen to where the castles are. From there you need to park and go up a hill by foot, bus, or carriage to N. You need reservations for your half hour tour and it takes another 20 minutes to walk to the stunning Mariensbrucke - the footbridge above the falls. From there it's almost another 30 minute walk to Hohenschwangau. I don't know about that castle tour as I didn't do it but I do hear that Fodorite's do both in one day and the ticketing can be bought with both castles on it.

Fussen is a lovely spot for lunch, dinner, or just coffee and apple strudel (I recommend the Stadt Cafe in the center square for the apfelstreudel and to see the friendly locals...)

We arrived in the evening the night before, saw the castle in the morning, headed to Fussen where we shopped, ate and hit the Romantic Road by about 3:30. We definitely would have enjoyed a bit more time in this area. The scenery is stunning and there are wonderful bike and walking paths. I do think it's easy to see both of these castles in one day though if you choose to as they are basically in the same little area and all walkable (although I recommend using some transport up). They are beautiful to see by night as well.

I wouldn't rush out of the area just because of the natural beauty that deserves to be enjoyed...

I do plan to be back there soon just for that purpose.

It's about 1:30 hr from Munich to Linderhof.

Figure 3 hr for the palace and the Grotto - a must see.

It opens at 09:00

It will rake about 1:15 hr to get to Neuschwanstein.

You have to pick up your tickets about 1 hr before you are scheduled for the tour.

You could do both in one day.

You could also take one day to visit Oberammergau and Linderhof, and see Hohenschwangau and Neuschwanstein the next.

Thanks everyone for your reply. I chose Linderhof instead of Hohenschwangau as these (Neuschwanstein and Linderhof) are the ones we really wanted to see. The Munich to Fussen route is only one part of a planned itinerary I wasn't really sure on. I don't want to "Griswold" this trip, you know?
