Munich to Berlin Itinerary Help!

My partner & I will be flying into Munich mid May we are both early 30's(love beautiful scenery, quaint villages, art). We were planning on exploring Bavaria for 5 days then make our way up to Belin for another 5 days. We will be relying on trains/buses.
Can anyone suggest some possible itineraries from Munich to Berlin? What places are a must see? Would it be best to base ourselves in one place in Bavaria & then take day trips? Is it worth getting a rail pass or just buying single tickets?
Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks

wilamena25,

A Germany Twin pass may be the better deal, might not. Depends on your itinerary. You have to know where you are going first. Here are some thoughts.

1. Stay in Munich 2 days for the art.
2. Stay in Mittenwald for 2 days for the quaint village and beautiful scenery requirements. From there you can make day trips by train or bus to many beautiful sites.
3. Stay in Bamberg 1 night on the way to Berlin for an authentic German experience. Beautiful, walkable town.
4. Berlin is art central. But quaint and beautiful is questionable. For the last two I would take a train to the Hanseatic city of Lubeck for 2 nights and then come back to Berlin where I assume you are flying out of. Lubeck provides elemnets of all three requirements. Good luck.

I have done somemore research & this is what I'm thinking now:
2 nights Munich (day trip to Ludwig's castle)
2 nights Bamberg (day trips to surrounding areas)
1 night Erfurt
6 nights Berlin
How does that sound? Is there a better place to stay overnight other than Erfurt or should we stay the whole 3 nights in Bamberg before getting the train to Berlin?

I would take a night away from Berlin and add it to Munich, not necessarily for Munich itself, but so you can do another day trip, since you say you like quaint villages. Maybe spend a day exploring Munich, another day at Neuschwanstein (which I think is what you meant by Ludwig's castle), and then maybe another day at Oberammergau for the scenery. If you like art and impressive palaces (Neuschwanstein is amazing, but definitely not your typcal castle), you could also spend part of that third day visiting the palaces in the suburbs of Munich (Schleissheim and especially Nymphenburg). Alternately, you could do a side trip to Salzburg for the day from Munich. I really love Berlin, but I think you're missing some of the things down south by spending so many days in Berlin. I second everyone's love for Bamberg.
