yes, I love to shop :) and take scenic pictures (photo ops) ... is the Marienplatz the main shopping district in Munich?

The area around the Marienplatz has any number of fine stores, and there's a large department store opposite the town hall. You can have purchases shipped home, if you wish, which is very convenient.

Beware much of the shopping there is priced for tourists. You can also find many shops at the Hauptbahnhof.

Select English. Please consider a FlohMarkt (flea market) You can find some that operate regularly in the Munich area. I think there is one at Kunstpark Ost. Saturdays and Sundays from 0700 - 1700 at S-bahn stop Ostbahnhof. We've picked up mugs, lace, curtains, table cloths, and many other beautiful items at flea markets. Please barter and don't take first price. And you can meet some new friends too!

If you're looking for things you don't need at an elevated price level the area between HBF and Marienplatz is for you. Spend some time at Hertie. Groceries are available at the Elisenhof (next to Hertie at HBF. It's the only place downtown where you don't have to pay more than in the suburbs for a bottle of Pepsi ;-)
There are 2 bigger malls in town. The OEZ and the PEP. Nothing to write home about, but basically all you need OEZ is the "Olympiaeinkaufszentrum", PEP is at "Neuperlach Zentrum" U-Bahn station. The Euroindustriepark has shops like Wal-Mart, wholesalers like Metro and a number of other shops, you'll better have a car to go there. Close to the station (HBF) there's Schillerstraße, if you need Converters, basic Electronics and Computer parts. (Thery're less expensive than in the US, so if you forgot something, go there.

Simply for window shopping, the stores along the Maximilianstrasse, starting at the opera and heading east, are fun . (But expensive)

But DO visit the Dallmeyer delicatessen in the Dienerstrasse. It's a short walk from the Marienplatz, on the east side of the Rathaus (city hall. It offers about everything culinary that you can think of, and has some sinful candy, pastries as well as nice lunch sandwhiches.

They have everything from chocolate to fine china and silly souveniers if you like them.

Ahhh, Munich shopping! My very favorite market on earth is just off the Marienplatz, to the southeast--the Victualienmarkt. There have been several posts recently about the wide range of foods available there, and the photo ops are wonderful. Go at lunch time, buy a wurst and a bier, sit under the trees and munch away. Heaven! It's open every weekday; I'm not sure about the weekends.

My favorite Munich department store, Ludwig Beck, is on the Marienplatz. Enjoy!

Hertie is fabulous! They have the most amazing china and crystal section I have ever seen.

I also found great Christmas stuff there.

And the food court in the cellar defies description.

Wow, I woke up this morning to 5 new posts! Thank you all. yes, i will be hitting the Marienplatz as well as Hertie and every other place mentioned.

I love the German Christmas Decorations (Steinbach smokers, ornaments, nutcrackers and other wooden ones) so I am very excited to check out the Christmas decorations.

And for a younger spirit, Leopoldstr. and Hohenzollenstr. in Schwabing have some of the trendier shops.
