Munich Restaurants and Wine Bar Recommendations
 

We are headed to Munich in late November (5th visit) and I would really appreciate some recommendations. We have had good but not great experiences to date with restaurants and would very much like to find a few places worth repeat visits. Definitely not looking for the Hofbrauhaus type of food or atmosphere.

We really enjoy ethic foods and would like some options for non Bavarian food as well as local dishes. We both enjoy sushi, Mediterranean, Asian and are not particularly fond of the heavier German foods but very much enjoy a well prepared venison.

We did see quite a lot of restaurants in Schwabing (dined at Limoni and Byblos last year) but do not know where to start as there are so many.

Mid range pricing preferred.

Also, we enjoy wine bars and enjoyed the bar at Hotel Europa near the Hbf - any additional recommendations are appreciated!

Any suggestions for jazz clubs or upscale hotel bars with live music are welcome.

Good Bavarian food in Munich is very hard to find!!! As are jazz clubs.

I know a small but brilliant Bavarian restaurant. The cook is from south eastern Europe as is the waitress. The food is devine! and inexpensive. If I posted here were it is, I wouldn't find a seat the next time. I don't want that ;-)
They do serve kinds of tripes, if you like, but I wouldn't touch them. :D . I grew up knowing not every part of a cow is eatable.
Did you ever try REAL Bavarian food? ;-)

logos999, there are many things I do not eat for reasons of staying healthy. No pork, fried meats, butter, pastries, cream, etc. I stick to a low fat diet and much German food does not fit in that category. So REAL Bavarian food - if it be in this category - does not appeal to me. I do enjoy the occasional leberkase and a wurst every now and again, but rarely.

I went to university in Salzburg and spent a good bit of time traveling in Bavaria over the years. About ten years ago, I dated a gentleman who lives in Berlin for some time and he took me to lots of smaller, non touristy places on road trips in the countryside. We had some wonderful meals in smaller villages especially and have also had some excellent meals over the past two yeas when in Bavaria.

Our most memorable meal last year was at the Alpenrose Inn on the way to the castles. My husband had filets of venison and I had a stew - both divine.

And I quite like tripe, as I am Italian and grew up eating it. Not sure about the Bavarian preparation.

So try Saure Kutteln, that's as real as it gets. It's not easy to find on a menue these days. You seem to already know the best places for food :D

I would never expect that there would be decent food at a place named "Alpenrose Inn" (If that exists, it would only cater to foreigners). I know the Hotel Alpenrose at the Achensee. Maybe that's what you meant.

No, that is not it and there was no one there that spoke English - it was filled with working men and we had a car and driver who took us there as we were leaving Linderhof Castle; it was about an hour drive from there. I can recognize a tourist restaurant (I am well traveled and not ignorant) and it was off the beaten path.

If I already knew the best places for food in Munich, I would not have posted this question. We have had good luck outside of Munich proper but I am looking for Munich suggestions.

Any other posters with helpful suggestions - they would be appreciated!

Topping for you to finally read Gault Milleau and enter "Munich". It's all in there, EVERYTHING, every place for you to enjoy. :D. It seems you don't want to. So maybe someone opens a new 5* restaurant, that's not listed there. :D

O.K, I'd suggest the Höfbräuhaus, but that's not a chique.

Try the Ratskeller in Munich. We went there as a group and liked it a lot. The food, location, and atmosphere are all very good. The price is right, too.

I was in Munich in Nov for work for two weeks. Our office is in Haidhausen so where my notes say near the office that is what it refers too. I was traveling with a vegetarian and a co worker who eats fish but no meat or poultry. Most of the places were very reasonably priced since it was on an expense account.
