Munich - Restaurants
My husband and I will be in Munich for only (2) nights and staying at the Hotel Uhland. I've read about the HofBrauhaus (very touristy .. but husband will enjoy) ... OR the Augustiner ... any other great restaurant recommendations out there?
I also imagine we will grab a bite to eat at the Viktualienmarkt. :) We will also be visiting Dachau as well as walking around the Marienplatz .. probably won't hit any museums or palaces this time around. Thanks! |
During the day we actually ate in one of those indoor/outdoor places right at/near the Marienplatz. Lots of locals.
I don't usually go to beer halls to eat so cannot really comment on the quality of any food served but am sure it will be fun and enjoyable and not necessarily filled with tourists, either. |
The Augustiner Keller Beer Garden is a great place to sit outside, have a beer, chicken on the spit, brats, etc. Lunch would be best in my opinion.
The Spatenhaus is a nice, not expensive, restaurant to get some authentic German food. Hofbrauhaus? Go in, look around, maybe have a beer, and say you've been there, done that, maybe buy a t-shirt. :-) ((b)) |
Intrepid1, Budman, thanks for the replies. Budman, yes, I think we will have a beer in the hofbrauhaus, take a good picture and say we've done that! Great suggestion of the Augustiner for lunch! Thanks!

>Augustiner
I hope you're not talking about Augustiner downtown in Neuhauser Str., but at Landsberger Str., at the brewery. Downtown's not such a good idea. |
It's only a short walk from your hotel, btw.
|
I'm talking about the one down the street from the Hauptbahnhof with lots of huge tree outside, not the one downtown. ((b))

Landsberger Straße 19 :-)

Katzen - the Augustiner brewery is wonderful, as everyone else has said... we ate near the windows near the "mall" entrance, and I was suprised to see how huge the place is once we wandered into the beer hall on a subsequent visit. btw, the pretzels are NOT free! ;-)
My wife's cousin in Munchen is a vegan, and he took us out for a wonderful dinner at Prinz Myshkin, assuming it's still viable. Very cosmopolitan atmosphere, and I tried to fit in and not smirk at the smokers enjoying their vegan meals. We visited during easter weekend and my big disappointment was that Alois Dallmayr was closed the entire time we were there - I'd heard wonderful things about the cafeteria there. Bon appetito! |
Logos999, the address you gave is different, I think, than the site budman provided. Is this a diff. place you are referring to? Thanks for pointing out the different location .. I probably would have ended up at the one downtown!
|
ronin, which one did you eat at .. the one downtown or by the train station? Thanks!
|
Yes, i think Budman refers to the one next to the "BR" TV building, that's nice but crowded and expensive. Too many tourists there. ;-) At the Augustiner brewery a beer (1/2) liter costs 2.30€ and the food is better.

The Augustiner brewery is at Landsberger 19.
|
Looks like I need to put the brewery on my agenda for next trip. ((b))
|
logos999, thanks for clearing that up! :)

For good sausages, sauerkraut, home-made mustard, and a wide variety of breads, head to Peterhof. It's right on the Marienplatz, and our whole group really, really liked both the food and the ambience.

katzen, maybe I should've said brewhouse, 'cuz we visited the Altstad location. We also ate a fine meal at the Lowenbrau hofbrauhaus but we had access to a car & driver for that trip. I just had to laugh when my wife's cousin - who doesn't even drink anymore - complained to our server when the beer at Lowenbrau was served... BELOW the line! I was just happy to get a beer, but I understand the principle of the thing.
I'll admit to a walk-through of THE Hofbrauhaus, for posterity's sake... and I don't even think the locals went into the Hard Rock Cafe! and are there any Andean musicians left in Peru? They were on the Altstad, the Metro in Madrid, Aloha Towers in Honolulu... here in my town of Sacramento! |
Looks like the brewery and the beer garden are just across the train tracks from each other. You could conceivably go to both. ((b))
|
budman, I may just do that :) Can't pass up a good beer and good food!
