Munich Restaurants??
 

I am going to Munich for the first time.

Any recommendations? Any great traditional Bavarian places (whatever that means?)? Any places of note other than Tantris? If you've been to Tantris, any thoughts?

Tantris is French with a bit of German influence i.e the chef's German.

I haven't eaten there but friends who have say its very expensive for what you get. I live nearby and work past it alot and the fix menu is about 175 euro per head without wine. It's a little difficult to find but don't worry they have limo's to pick you up!

There are many great Bavarian places it just depends on how much effort your prepared to get there. In the city centre I like the Ratskeller for atmosphere, always busy, nicely decorated cellar and the food is not bad both for price or taste (mains about 15 Euro)

There is a website in english called www.toytownmunich.com and this gives a list of Bavarian restaurants with reviews and if they have a website.

It may be considered touristy by the locals, I don't know but I was directed to the huge Augustiner beer restuarant by my co-worker(a former Munich resident) and we really liked it. We had some hearty German food and good local beer at it.

It is on the south side of the main street(Neuhauser strasse) connecting Marienplatz and the Bahnhof. Approximately half way between the two places.

I was in Munich a few months ago and found a lovely, very rustic Italian restaurant that we ate in 2 nights in a row because the food and atmosphere was so good.
It's called La Vecchia Masseria and it's on 4 Mathildenstr. in the city centre. We got a taxi there so not sure about the nearest U Bahn stop. The food was wonderful and it was very reasonable.
For an authentic Bavarian meal, we also tried the Augustiner Restauarant on Neuhauser Str. and the Ratskeller Restaurant at the Marienplatz.

I also recommend the Augustiner Keller Beer Garden (down the street from the Main train station). Great beer and good food. Another great place is the Spatenhaus for great traditional German food.

Stay away from the Hofbrauhaus -- go in to take a peak then head somewhere else for food/beer. ((b))

We had several very good meals at the Peterhof restaurant, right on the Marienplatz. Great variety of breads, house-made sauerkraut and mustard.

Nothing is more traditional than a beer garden. Here is the link to the famous guide (http://www.beerdrinkersguide.com/). The Seehaus beer garden in the Englischergarten has a great view overlooking a lake. Augustiner Grossgaststätte, Neuhauser Straße 27 was my favorite and Nürnberger Bratwurstglöckl, Frauenplatz 9 is very famous for its Nurnberger Sausage. I would also recommend buying a picnic lunch at the Viktualienmarkt and having a few beers at the beer garden there.

Our two favories for Bavarian food are the aforementioned Augustiner and the Andeches Am Dom. The Augustiner is very authentic and you can get a good fare of German food from fish to Wurst. Try the Weiss Wurst and Blau kraut (blue ...kid of sweet saurkraut). The Andechs is the same people who run the restaurant at the monestary South of Munich but it it is right behind the Frauenkirche. Another place we have enjoyed is the Ratskeller under the Neues Rathaus (the glockenspiel place).

We liked the Augustiner Beer garden also- great chicken and potato salad.

The Ratskeller (sp?) underneath the building with the Glockenspiel was also good and very atmospheric.

We actually ate at the Hofbrauhaus twice and had good meals both times. The second time we went back specifically to get a pork dish that had been marinated in beer - excellent! Another place we enjoyed was the Lowenbrau restaurant which had good food and good beer. We ate at two different Italian places (can't remember the names) which were also very good. Didn't really have a bad meal while in Munich.

The very informal outdoor beer garden at the Viktualienmarkt with their long communal tables, fresh and very good German beers and sausages are a must when in Munich.

One of our favorite spots is Alois Dallmyer. This is a restaurant/deli/gourmet food store with treats from all over the world. It's a great spot for finding gifts to bring home or fun meals to bring back to your hotel. There is also a small restaurant attached. Just off the Marienplatz

One more vote for the Augustiner beer garden--an extended lunch there on a warm spring/summer day is one of the best Munich experiences.

I'm also a big fan of putting together a picnic at the Viktualienmarkt.

We liked Peterhof, right on the Marienplatz. Great sausage, sauerkraut, and house-made mustard, along with a huge basket of different breads.

How about the prices? I will be in Munich for 4 days in early November,on a rather tight budget (I will stop there on my way back from Bangkok). Does anybody have any suggestions for moderate to budget restaurants where a middle-aged woman could go alone?

For Summer, outdoor, weather I'd reccomend the Viktualenmarkt for lunch and the beer garden at the Chinese tower for lunch or dinner.

For November or bad weather I'm surprised no one mentioned the Rathauskeller, decent for the price.
