Munich - Prague-other information

My granddaughter 15, and I will arrive in Munich 6/3 and leave from Frankfort 6/21. We plan to spend the first 4 nights in Munich, travel by train to Prague for 3 nights and return to Munich. I have resevations in Garmisch 6/15 and 6/16. We were hoping to go to Vienna for a day or two. We will rent a car when we return from Prague. We do not want to tour many castles nor drive through mountains for long periods of time, Love small villages and we will be on a somewhat tight budget. Need help!! Thanks in advance

It isn't clear what kind of help you need. Itinerary? Hotels? Transportation? Sights?

Assuming all of your air reservations are firm, and assuming you might want to know how to fit in some time in Vienna, I suggest you spend only one night in Munich when you arrive, then take the train to Prague to stay for 3 nights. Then take a train to Vienna and stay for 2 nights. Then take a train back to Munich to stay for a few days and pick up your car. Change your reservations for Garmisch to a couple of days later if you can. Your plan to drive to Garmisch will involve some mountain driving, but not a whole day. Once past Garmisch, I assume you want to visit some nice little villages on the way to Frankfurt. Stop for your first night at Heidenheim, a nicely situated village southeast of Stuttgart. The second night, go to Heidelberg. For a final night, go on to a small village near the Frankfurt airport. I suggest a little town south of Mainz called Oppenheim. Good luck.

Message: Do you know if there is an easier and faster way to Prage then the train from Munich? I like your suggestion to return to Vienna from Prague. I am looking for suggestions on how to see as much as possible during our time there. Would it pay me to buy any sort of rail pass here in the states before we leave?

You can check the rail passes at http://www.eurail.com/
A rail pass wouldn't make sense for your original plan, that was just a roundtrip ticket Munich <-> Prague followed by a rental car.

Taking the trains Munich -> Prague -> Vienna -> Munich (or Garmisch?) does make sense. You'd be arriving back in Munich on the 14th or so, then visit Garmisch.

After that, you've got 7 nights. Two of them will be in Garmisch. You really need to compare the railpass costs versus rental car costs (plus gasoline, insurance if not covered by a credit card, and possible drop-off charges for getting the car in Bavaria and dropping it in Frankfurt).

After 4 nights in Munich, you'll have 13 nights of travelling to other places. Using a 15-day rail pass might make sense.

And the easier/faster way from Munich to Prague is to fly. If you spend June 7 (Sat. nite) in Prague then your fares would be about $300 each.

Lufthansa has a special deal for German domestic travel at 92 Euros roundtrip. You could fly from Munich to Dresden, visit that city for a day or two, then train to Prague. You could then use the return part of your ticket to get back to Munich (from Dresden), or just go on to Vienna, etc.

I seem to have made a mess of this link. But I have anohter question. I looked at www.railsaver.com and it gave me the cheapest way to go from Munich to Prague to Vienna. It suggested I buy Praque Excursion tickets for the travel in CZ. Should I buy them here or are they also available in Munich? Thanks for all your help
