Munich or Fussen for Bavaria Region?

Hi everyone! I figured I would post in just the Germany area for this question. My fiance and I would like to include Munich on part of our honeymoon which will be end of June 2016 and into July. We would love to spend some time sightseeing in Munich, but we also love the smaller towns or villages like what Fussen would offer.

A must for us is to see the Neuschwanstein castle. We would prefer to NOT live out of suitcases so my question is, how much time should we spend in Munich? We were thinking 4 nights and visiting the Bavarian area like Fussen. Does it make more sense to do this OR stay a few nights in Munich and a night or so in Fussen to see the castle and stroll the streets? From here we plan to head to Salzburg.

Thanks so much!

If we're to help you allocate your time, it would help if you could explain your purpose... Why have you decided to visit Munich? What makes Neuschwanstein a "must?"

Are you flying into Munich first thing or arriving from elsewhere in Europe?

You ask, "how much time should we spend in Munich? We were thinking 4 nights and visiting the Bavarian area like Fussen." Bavaria is much larger than you seem to think. Munich is in Bavaria. Here's a map:

You probably don't have time to "visit the Bavarian area" in its entirety, but obviously, there are lots and lots of other places you might visit in addition to (or instead of) Munich and Füssen.

Neuschwanstein, by the way, is not a real castle, and you will have only 30 minutes on the tour. Since it's your honeymoon, maybe you'd like to stay a night or two in a real castle instead... there are such places in Bavaria.

A honeymoon in Bavaria would be lovely.
It is an easy train ride to Fuessen from Munich.
You mentioned strolling the streets of Fuessen, it is a delightful town in a stunning location. Obviously most people just head to the castle, but if you like walking or cycling there are fabulous hikes and cycling tracks.
We stayed in a lovely hotel, City Apart, right in the pedestrian zone, with great eateries all around. Walking around the lake, strolling the town, cablecar to Tegelberg (we did the Reitweg walk down the mountain back to the castle).
We didn't do the castle tour, as it was the setting that interested us, nestled on the side of a mountain. So beautiful.
So as to not retrace our steps, we took the bus to Reutte, then train to Mittenwald via Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
Another nice mix of Bavarian towns with cablecars, lakes, forests, and 'klamm' walks.
A nice train ride to Salzburg from there is via Innsbruck.
Salzburg has a gorgeous historic centre and imposing fortress, and a great day trip is to take the bus to Berchtesgaden (only 45mins or so), to the lake there (Koenigsee), walk to second lake and around it, to a beer garden, the water is turquoise, the forests so green, and you are surrounded by mountains. If it's a clear day, the cablecar up Mt Jenner is nearby.

Hi GoldenGril1028,

I guess the best place for your stop would depend on whether you see yourselves in a country environment or in a city? Do you want to be surrounded by blocks and blocks of restaurants, cafes, and shops, or do you want to be near vast acres of rolling countryside and mountains? Do you see yourselves spending your time hiking/walking in the countryside or strolling city streets?

Either one would be lovely --

Have fun as you plan!

I bet it would be a fun honeymoon... Maybe you can visit first in Munich as it is an hour away in Fussen then visit to Neuschwanstein Castle. I've been there and its so beautiful and full of history then lastly in Salzburg to visit the EaglesNest just perfect for the last stop and spend a day or two. gosh, seems like you are in a very romantic Journey.. Keep falling in love. You can check this out too btw. https://welovetotraveltoo.wordpress....angau-germany/
