Munich on a Sunday?

We will be in Munich for 4 nights. Our first full day is a Sunday. On that day I was planning on doing the Residenz and then just exploring the Marienplatz and Viktualmarket, but now am worried that Sunday won't be the best day for that. I know that the Residenz will be open but what about the Viktualmarket as well as stores, etc. on the Marienplatz and along the Maximillianstrasse?

I could switch and do Dachau on Sunday, but didn't really want to leave town on our first day in Munich.

>but what about
closed, of course. Did you expect those places to be open on a Sunday?

We will be there June 14-18, 2008

When I was in Munich in Dec 2006 and Jan 2007- most places were closed on Sunday...the Marienplatz was pretty much dead, quite contrary to the hustle and bustle of any other day of the week.

I don't travel a lot in Germany, but non-food stores being closed all day Sunday is pretty much the norm in Italy & France (perhaps most of Europe too) for larger & med-sized cities. Some ultra-touristy villages (St Tropez) will be open - and some shops in Florence advertised that they would be open on Sunday. The Marais in Paris has shops open - but that's about it.

As a general rule, we never plan to visit a city on Sunday or Monday morning. I also understand that shops in some cities in Germany & Switzerland close Saturday afternoon.

I was in Munich the first weekend of June 1997 and Marienplatz was dead in the AM; crazy crowded after 11am.

I don't know how long you will be in Munich but there is plenty to do on a Sunday in mid June in Munich. Enjoy strolling the Marienplatz, Viktualien Market, Hofbrau Haus, Deutsches Museum, Pinakoteks, Dachau, Englisher Garten and probably the Residence and Nymphenburg Palace. Unless you are popping in during services the churches will be open also; Frauen Kirche, Alte Pater Kirche and Asam Kirche.

If you are going there mainly for the shopping then obvioulsly you will need to hold off until Monday.

Try doing what the locals do...window shop!

Well a whole lot of locals also head to the vast Englischer Gardens and to the huge Chinese Pagoda beer hall where brew and grilled chicken and German fare are served up - thousands come here on a nice Sunday

and the park is also, on a nice day, thronged including many nudists who unabashedly lie in the buff even right by the walking paths - so not for the bashful on a nice day at least

But the Chinese Pagoda is quintessential German thing to do on a Sunday

Have you seen their prices lately.... On BR news today they siad food prices have risen by 25% in the last 12 months.
Many shops need more of those filthy rich americans to survive.

AisleSeat Apr 21st, 2008 03:47 PM

Does that mean beer prices have gone up too?

logos999 Apr 21st, 2008 09:52 PM

Everything has gone up, butter, milk, bread, cheese and beer too.
Milk has reached 1€ per liter, compared to 65ct a year ago (and the list goes on). Wonder how people manage that aren't that well off.
