Munich in December

Hi all,

You always have such good ideas, advise, comments, I thought I'd post this and see what comes up.

We are planning to travel the beginning of December, probably 2 weeks total. Thinking of spending a week in and around Munich, then the other week we're not sure of ... thinking Italy, maybe Portugal. The order of weeks is not important.

How long in Munich do you think? 3 nights? then perhaps to a smaller town for the next 3-4 nights? Do you know of any apartments in Munich?

I appreciate your comments advise and ideas

Thanks :)

one nice thing about munich and many other german towns in december is the wonderful christmas markets...lots of fun....from munich you can take day trips to saltzburg, to ludwig's castles, to the concentration camp at dacau...so a week would not be bad.....

Are you planning to fly between the various countries? It will take a long ways to drive, otherwise.

Munich in winter it's cold. Maybe cut this time down and find better cities.

The smaller city/cities you're planning might be Salzburg and/or Lucern.

Okies, it's really looking like we will go to Munich, and just do day trips from there. We'll probably stay around 10-12 days.

Any suggestions on day trips? Restaurants? Must do's? apartment vs hotel? Anything?

Thanks so much for all your help!!

One of the good things about day tripping out of any Bavarian town or city is the Bavaria pass on the train. It is good for travel anywhere in Bavaria and they extend that to Salzburg. The one drawback is you have to travel after 9am. Cost is @ 22 Euros and it is good for up to 5 people. You can easily daytrip to Salzburg, Nernberg, Fussen and a whole lot more.

Cold or not, I think Munich will make a great base since there is plenty to do in town as well as lots of easy day trips by train.

On the apartment versus hotel question, I think with a trip that long, I would choose an apartment. I think a hotel room would start to feel pretty cramped after 4 or 5 days. Plus, with an apartment you would be able to have some meals in if you wanted.

We were in Munich in July, so our activities and everything were geared toward warm weather - we chose our restaurants based on good outdoor seating and all of that. But there is one place I can recommend in Munich that has a neat interior - it is the Hackerhaus just south of the Marienplatz. The food was tastey and the people were great.

Denice,

I like Munich a lot but I think 10-12 days is a long time to stay right there days trips notwithstanding.

I am sure I'll now get creamed with everytone sayisg there's so much to see, etc., etc., but have you considered going somewhere close for a cpouple of days such as Salzburg which only takes 1.5 hours by train?

You can even get a budget flight to Berlin for $50 o/w if you book early enough.

If you are going to stay for that long and are into all things Ludwig then I would definitely suggest a trip to the palace at Herrenchiemsee; it is the largest and most elaborately decorated of all the Ludwig builds.

Thanks Suzi for the links.

Dukey, my friend and I have travelled extensively, so staying in one place, with day trips is quite appealing to us.

Keep em coming!

Denice,
If you want a ton of information, type in the words, "Munich restaurants" or "Bavaria day trips" in the search box and it will yield a number of threads from folks who have asked these questions in the past.

Bavaria in December can be magical. You can check out the Christkindl markets in Munich, Augburg and Nuremburg. My in-laws live near Munich and we have done lots of daytrips:

Garmisch
Fuessen and the Castles
Oberammergau
Rothenburg ob der Tauber
Salzburg
Dachau
Ammersee
